Courthouse set on fire during protest in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A protest through the streets of downtown Oakland, California, in support of racial justice and police reform turned violent when "agitators" among the demonstrators set fire to a courthouse, vandalized a police station and shot fireworks at officers, authorities said.

About 700 demonstrators participated in what started as a peaceful march Saturday night but then some broke from the larger group and smashed windows, spray-painted graffiti and pointed lasers at officers, the Oakland Police Department said on Twitter. Several tweets called for peace and asked organizers to "help us provide safe spaces and safe places for demonstrators."

Several fires were set in the downtown area, including one at the Alameda County Superior Courthouse that was quickly contained. Police said protesters at one point were "breaking windows and chanting racial slurs at residents." Photos tweeted by the department showed broken glass and paint splattered on the police headquarters building.

Video posted by police showed a man kicking down barricades in front of the building after an "unlawful assembly" was declared by police around 11:30 p.m. and officers asked the crowd to disperse. Police said they made several arrests but did not provide details. There were no immediate reports of injuries to protesters or officers.

If a court house is set afire, it’s not a protest, it’s a riot.

Journalistic “catch-a-clue.”

Its NewSpeak. We aren’t allowed to say it so we aren’t allowed to think it. I asked a security guard yesterday if the plywood being put up was for the rioters and he said it was for the “protestors.”

Maybe he was being surveilled by his boss and had to use the “correct” language.

It’s Saturday night in Oakland. Get out the plywood!

Casting doubt in your mind as to who the aggressors are here by putting "agitators" in quotes.

You'll notice they NEVER put "protestors" in quotes, even though it's clear they are vandals and anarchists.

Notice the change in wording they had to make with the title. as with their narrative it should read
"Courthouse set on fire during (mostly peaceful) protest in Oakland"

All welfare benefits have been denied. You have to appear in person at the courthouse to appeal. When the courthouse reopens you will be given a date.

Oaktown trying to be Portland

nice try. You’re not even close

The problem for all the agitators here in the bay area is just the weather is so damn pleasant it’s hard to get agitated

It’s like 75 and sunny with no humidity every single day

It might hit 90 it might be 60 in the fog

I’ve been going to Oakland for 30 years it used to be Cracktown

West Oakland was a dangerous war zone as well as Emeryville

but in the 90s. tons of money moved in and incredible amounts of money Have been moving into Oakland and “gentrifying” it fir decades

They’ve pretty much Maxed out. San Francisco so it’s got to go over to Oakland. It’s 10 min over Spectacular bridge the Bay Bridge

the bottom line is is people want to go to their little cafés - And have their little Marxist chatsand weed shops and all that crap

so they’re not going to trash it

The looters here are basically trying to always get to the numbers where they feel like they’re not obvious And can go for it.

but their problem these days is that everybody on the planet has a video camera all the time link to satellites

So for the most part all they can do is break stuff and paint stuff -which isn’t very interesting.

And if you’re over the age of 25 you’ll realize that stealing is not very interesting either

It’s actually a lot of energy to riot and protest it’s hard to keep motivated if you don’t really have a cause - and George Floyd is not a cause

Yeah, thats all true, but isnt it fun to watch all the black nostalgics try to bring back the 60s and Burn Baby Burn?

So quaint. Maybe we can all go out looting after dinner!

After all, everyone wears a mask these days, right?

Very true.In fact, each member of Congress either covertly or overtly supports, aids, and abets ANTIFA as well fights and opposes President Trump in his quest to protect America. Chief among the, being Nancy Pelosi. Satan incarnate.

It’s stunning to see the twitter threads of those reporting where to hit and advising rioters where to hit and even which streets to go down......

Oh, how utterly genteel. It’s a sad state of affairs when the targets of the violence are in the “asking” mode.

Losers!! Keep showing deference and kowtowing to the looters and arsonists, that will for sure make them behave.

PS

The real question is, why are the cops not shutting down cell coverage in those areas?

In addition to Twitter, there are encrypted communication apps. They must know that. If they are following Twitter for intelligence reasons, they have to know there’s other means that they may not have cracked.

Just kill the cell coverage in downtown Portland and then only the police have encrypted comm.

It’s a war. Nobody lets the other side piggy back on their equipment.
