Russia flexes 'growing power' of its Navy with huge parade involving 200 warships in St Petersburg as Vladimir Putin promises 40 new vessels equipped with hypersonic weapons

President Vladimir Putin said the Russian navy will get 40 new ships this year, as he attended a naval parade in St Petersburg on Sunday marking the country's Navy Day.

The parade in the port city and the nearby town of Kronshtadt featured 200 ships and vessels and over 4,000 troops and aimed to 'demonstrate the growing power of our navy,' Putin said on Friday.

He said 40 ships of different classes will enter service this year, and that the Russian navy will be equipped with hypersonic weapons to boost its combat capabilities.

Opening the parade, he said that 'six more vessels for the far-sea zone were laid down at Russia's three leading shipyards' in the past few days.

The Kremlin has made military modernization its top priority amid tensions with the West that followed Moscow's 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Similar parades marking Russia's Navy Day on Sunday took place in the Far Eastern cities of Vladivostok and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsk, Sevastopol in the annexed Crimea, the seaport towns of Severomorsk and Baltiysk, Kaspirsk in the south of Russia and the port city of Tartus in Syria.

Earlier this week Putin attended a ceremony of keel-laying of new warships in Crimea and pledged to continue an ambitious program of building new warships, saying that Russia needs a strong navy to defend its interests and 'help maintain a strategic balance and global stability.'

Traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday of July, the Navy Day is a national holiday in the Russian Federation that honours the sailors in units of the Russian Navy and its specialised arms.

Where are they cranking out that many ships? 40 ships in a year sounds approaching WW2 levels.

Pentagon admirals were upset about this turn of events and countered Putin’s statement that “... Russia needs a strong navy to defend its interests ... help maintain a strategic balance and global stability”, by going him one better, to wit, “America needs a strong navy to defend its social justice interests and help maintain a strategic balance of gender and racial mixes.”

On hearing the Admirals comments, Putin turned away from the gathered press corp and began visibly shaking. Media from the US immediately filed stores about Putin trembling in fear. However, Putin was unable to contain himself and, in an uncharacteristic moment, let loose with howls of laughter. He later apologized.

Most of these ships are fregates and corvettes - roughly from the size of WWII Fletcher class destroyer to less than twice as large.

The old “hypersonic” weapon threat gambit. Real or imagined ?

Mostly motor patrol boats and other coastal types. You can’t crank out too many major warships on an annual basis. They are too sophisticated and are multi-year builds. But it does point out why Putin took Crimea away from the Ukraine: he needed unfettered access to those shipyards and bases.

Doesn’t look good for our feminized, homosexualized navy, with commanding officers who play the TV cameras.

“RUSSIA is not our enemy”

Careful: You & I are in the distinct minority here.

The only flexing that’s going on is directed at China.
