Pres says he is ordering Medicare to buy Rx drugs at the prices other countries pay. Says it will "end global freeloading" on the backs of American seniors.

We’ve been over this tons of times here.

One reason the drugs are cheaper in other countries is because low prices are built in to those foreign contracts so that those countries don’t pirate the medicines.

Drug companies at least get something.

If they had to pay the same prices as we do it would be open season on drug knockoffs and the companies get nothing on the foreign markets.

Sucks but that’s the way it is.

Freaking BINGO.

So, you’re saying they still turn a profit off the drugs in those countries? Cause selling them at a loss wouldn’t make sense.

Dewey, Cheetham & Howe have their fingers in just about every pie in America. You cannot even have kids visit your house any more to play with your children without worrying about those guys. Outside of the most extreme cases, there is nothing you can show me that would convince me that medicine has gotten much better since lawyers got involved. A percentage of every dollar you spend goes to lawyers.....

“My dad paid a fortune for diabetic test strips”

I have just been shopping for these on Amazon, although I don’t personally have diabetes (yet). Around 60¢ each for quality Japanese strips, although people can pay 15¢ for a Chinese one if they dare (I wouldn’t).

See my #64. Are we talking about the same type of strips (blood glucose)?

I am of the opinion that if Congress had a spine (yeah, I know) that it would prohibit preferential pricing on medications. I company can publish ONE and ONLY ONE price for their medication - everyone pays the same.

In a world where government provides all healthcare, that word is monopsony.

What we essentially have now is the rest of the world foists drug development costs onto the backs of the American taxpayer by negotiating artificially low prices with the unstated threat to ignore patents and to produce a generic locally if an agreement can’t be made. It is always the case where a super-premier buyer controls the costs he will be charged.

Is price-fixing moral? (or legal for that matter)

Is it right for these companies to charge us, the captive market in America much more than they are willing to accept from others? Isn’t that a form of involuntary wealth redistribution?

I’m interested in the counter argument. Is this really a “free’ market? If the right to produce a drug is controlled by the govt, and the govt forbids us from buying oversees, is it then wrong expect that the govt makes sure we don’t get screwed too badly in the controlled system they set up?

No one is forcing the companies to sell their product to the government.

It is a perfectly sound approach to doing business.

My Humalog is over $1,000 90 days. Nexium taken of formulary
