A civil war is a really ugly thing.

Lots of maiming and blood and death.

Neighbor against neighbor.

Brother against brother.

The combat went on for a few years.

The fighting goes on to this very day on Free Republic.

I think it was kind of a risky move to put US military facilities in the former Confederate States.

Like I wrote, lots of blood and death in that war.

I haven’t looked into the detailed history of naming those military facilities, but I think they named them after Southern leaders as a show of goodwill.

The last thing the military needed was Southern citizens protesting and sabotaging military facilities.

Leave them named as they are.

Not as a salute to Southern leaders, but as a salute to goodwill.

A salute to the victors who said, “Enough is enough. It is time to heal this country and show a little strength. The strength to show we have no hatred towards our fellow Americans.”

So, you’re telling me that the majority of the non-draft core in WW1 and WW2 were southerners? Where is your proof of that? Eisenhower (Kansas) and Patton (California) might disagree with you. These bases were built were originally built to support the World Wars (Bragg in 1918, and Hood in 1942). I strongly suspect that well over 25% of the military in the World Wars were draftees. And the volunteer effort in the World Wars was very high in ALL parts of the country, not just the south.

The US Constitution defines treason as levying arms against the US. Did the Confederate generals levy arms against the US? If they did, then it’s treason. Note that this is not my definition, it is the definition of the Constitution. Do you not agree with the Constitution?

As far as Ford and Carter pardoning Vietnam era draft dodgers, I don’t really have a problem with that. Just like I don’t have a problem with Johnson and Grant pardoning Confederate soldiers after the Civil War. Please note that a pardon doesn’t mean they didn’t commit treason, just that they weren’t punished for it.

I guess my point is that US Army bases shouldn’t be named after traitors. They should be named after American Army heroes like Audie Murphy. Renaming the bases is the right thing to do.

The Constitution defines treason as levying war against the United States. If your ancestors bore arms against the US then, according to the US Constitution, they committed treason.

Don’t argue with me, argue with the Constitution.

Cuda, The CSA was a separate political entity from the USA. Either you are daft or a liar. The CSA was a separate political entity from the USA. The CSA wanted no part in overthrowing the government of the USA.

Hey was that you spray painting 'ACAB' on Gen Lee's statue the other day? You look good in all black.

So, your point is that, since the Confederacy was a separate political entity, there was no treason, since they weren’t US Citizens?

Did you know that President Johnson issued a Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon that covered most Confederate soldiers. The ones that weren’t covered had to request a Pardon in writing, which most did. Did you know that even Robert E Lee requested a pardon?

My question is, why did Johnson Pardon people if they never did anything wrong? We don’t normally give pardons to soldiers in foreign armies. I mean, I don’t remember Truman issuing a Proclamation of Amnesty and Pardon to the soldiers of the Wehrmacht. And, if they did nothing wrong, why did they accept the pardons? Typically accepting a pardon is an admission of guilt.

But, let’s go your direction. The CSA generals were really generals of a different country, and therefore were not traitors to the US. So, why are we naming US Army bases after generals of a different country, who killed tens of thousand American soldiers? Why not Fort Rommel, or Fort Kesselring? I mean they were more competent that either Bragg or Hood.

So, back to the (slight amended) original point. US Army bases should be named after US Army heroes. They should not be named after traitors, or generals in a different country who killed American soldiers.
