U.S. Senate passes $740 billion defense bill, bucking Trump on Confederate names

The U.S. Senate on Thursday passed its version of the National Defense Authorization Act, a $740 billion bill setting policy for the Pentagon that President Donald Trump has threatened to veto over a provision removing Confederate names from military bases.

The vote was 86-14, one of the few times the Republican-led Senate has broken from the president, and could pave the way for a fight later this year with the White House.

The Senate and Democratic-led House of Representatives each passed versions of the bill, known as the NDAA, with far more than the two-thirds majorities needed to override a veto.

The House bill also voted to include a provision to change the names of military facilities named after generals who fought on the pro-slavery side during the Civil War 155 years ago.

Yes, I have a problem erasing Democrat party history. However, I thought from the poorly written article, only the house (Dems) bill had renaming.

The Democrats are trying to erase all history. But they’re especially interested in removing their own bad history.

Robert E. Lee never said that his ‘...cause was motivated by slavery...’

Alexander Stephens did. As did multiple other members of the Confederate leadership.

I’m getting sick and tired of that spineless, POS McConnell. The only thing he has done well is judges and he isn’t doing much on those right now. He back channel maneuvering has lost Republican senate seats, he often goes against what the President wants and seems incapable of actually fighting the Democrats or actually leading the Republican senators. And, lets not forget his partnership with former House Speaker Ryan. He cannot be trusted and he proves that every day.

We’ve got Democrats trying to burn down the federal court house in Portland on a daily basis and China Mitch has his nose in base renaming debate. Remarkable, isn’t it?

Pocket veto.

This was a rider to the military budget. So, if it's vetoed, the military has a zero budget.

Pelosi should just hand her gavel over to BLM. That’s who’s running the country right now. Let’s just rename everything BLM and call it a day.

This has been a bad week for PDJT and it’s not even over yet.

I just scored 840 rds of 5.56mm at less than ripoff price, so that helps.

Under Republican leadership. We have lost more freedom than one could ever imagine. We are being erased by the global. Time to heed Jeremiah’s warning. They have the numbers, the good folks trump put into the supreme court which categorizes the very words of Jesus as a crime.
What is happening under a Republican president will make the nazi- russian alliance look like kindergarten cops.
What do you expect from a masked patriot who statred with bumpstock bans and kept going.
Too bad because i love his foreign policy.

Veto it.

He said he would. He's kind of stuck but we'll see.

He's not stuck. Its an excellent opportunity for Trump to show that he stands up for American history against the Maoists who seek to erase it.

He's not stuck.

Yeah he is. He either vetoes it or shows again that he'll cave to McConnell.
