Got the flu in 68 while home from army. My neighborhood doc called army clinic and said I should be home in bed for four days to recover. Clinic said he must report here 40 miles away. He yelled into phone that he had been medical officer with Paton in n Africa in 42 and as bad as things were I would have been in hospital there. Doc said tell him to stay home for a week!

My mom would have much rather had that cheese go to feed our troops than to our handout-seeking neighbors to try and buy their votes.

I also seem to recall that Carter bailed out the turkey farmers at some point and we had to eat some horrible processed turkey product for weeks on end in our school lunch.

I don’t remember it because I flew to China two weeks after Mao died, about September 23, 1976 and worked there for close to seven months. We got an occasional month-old Time or Newsweek Magazine, so I probably read about it.

The vaccination program started October 1, 1976, a week after I left the country.

I was only 25 years old at the time and invincible, so didn’t pay much attention to it.

As far as I know .... not a one .... but it's the wrong time of the year for the average American to comprehend the situation because they HAVE been forced to come up with lesson plans and etc.

The fact is, NEVER in American history has an American child been out of established school for the seven months they've BEEN out and there seems to be no viable plan for public schools to open again .... perhaps EVER .... normally ........................................................ ....................................................................

We're in the middle of a renaissance and no one knows what we'll look like on the other side.

There's a lot of damage that can be done between now and January .... a LOT .... and I honestly don't have that much faith in the American people to keep our heads on and above water.

That would have been a fascinating time to be in China. The country was pretty much bicycle-powered as I recall, and people were still getting over the psychological trauma of the Cultural Revolution.

I went into basic training with the swinw flu. Kept it hidden from my TI and his one day in the barracks cause I couldn’t do exercise workout outside. After that day I got better. Kept it hidden because I didn’t want to be sent back to day 1 of basic. No one else ever got sick from me even though we were in a barracks of about 50 Airmen Basics.

I remember back in those days watching Johnny Carson's "The Great Karnak" one night.

The answer to the question sealed in the envelope was:
"Swine Flu Vaccine".

Then he read the question inside the envelope:
"Name a cure for which there is no known disease".

I’m old enough. And while I’m not an anti-vaxxer, the swine flu vaccine debacle is one in the long list of reasons I won’t be first on line for a WuFlu jab.

BTW, the scandal was less about the safety of the vaccine than the huge error in thinking that particular one was needed. It’s all about risk vs benefit, and they way overrestimated the risk from the flu.

We were also poor growing up and my mother would never take a government handout. My friendly neighbor would and sometimes gave me her huge chunk of cheese. It must have been 10 pounds and yes it was good.

Say What? This was all media hype back then. After all was said and done I found ONE article on a person that came down with it, and no deaths. Others say a few more came down with it, maybe less than 25 people.

More people died of old age while standing in line to get the shots than died of Swine Flu.

I worked in the federal government in DC at the time. Web were told to submit to the vaccine shot or take indefinite, unpaid leave.

I was in the USAF at the time also. I was at my PDS and we were ordered to get the vaccine. I didn't think it prudent so I had a buddy in Medical Records forge my shot record stating I had the vaccination. I'm vaccinated to many diseases that are not a threat anymore including rabies and take the flu shot yearly, Shingles, and pneumococcus when necessary. In 1976 I just didn't think the Swine Flu Vaccine was a good decision.

In the USAF in January 1974 I was vaccinated with an experimental adenovirus vaccine that was used on 1000 recruits. They stopped because they found out the vaccine had a cancer gene within the vaccine. I learned of this six years later in an advanced virology class from a professor that was part of the vaccine testing group.
