Afraid off offending all the blacks who listen to, and contribute to the high art of opera.
I hope he sues. Most of the thugs he referred to doing the looting and rioting are white.
was removed after an uproar over racially charged comments that he made on a Bblack singers Facebook page
On Saturday, Julia Bbullock, a Bblack soprano, shared a Washington Post story on her Facebook page that quoted protesters in Portland, Ore., who said they had been detained by federal officers in unmarked vans. In response, Mr. Tucker commented, Good. Get rid of these thugs and I dont care where you send them. They are a Pox on our society.
In another comment, he wrote, About time someone tough will try to crush the mob before they destroy and kill more innocent people. Bravo to Trump to send in Federal troops.
When Russell Thomas, a Bblack tenor, replied in a comment that the Tucker Foundation had given its top prize, the Richard Tucker Award, to only one Bblack artist since it was first granted in 1978, Mr. Tucker wrote that pulling the race card is another convenient excuse to modify excellent standards of vocal artistry.
A spokeswoman for the foundation said on Monday that while there had been a single Bblack winner of the Tucker Award Lawrence Bbrownlee, in 2006 the foundation had awarded a dozen smaller career and study grants to Bblack artists over the past decade.
There are and have been a hand full of black opera singers (and some have great voices), but I dont think they are lionized by the Black community.
Right you are. Leontyne Price was the greatest Aida ever, but I bet if you said her name in the black community most would not know who she was. I saw her at the Orpheum in Omaha, Nebraska and she gave new meaning to “take the stage” for me.
As to Richard Tucker, when I was young, my Dad and I spent Saturday afternoons listening to the Metropolitan Opera live during the season. Richard Tucker and Robert Merrill were often cast together and it was a joy to hear them. It is disgusting that the foundation named for Tucker would act this way.
As to black opera singers, nobody is stopping a talented black person from competing in that genre. During my music studies and participation in the operatic world, there was great diversity across nationalities. The voice and stage talent ruled. Having a wonderful personality as Price did was icing on the cake.
If this self-anointed victim is so great, how come he can’t stand a few words thrown his way?
