How is it that the Republican rank and file is overwhelmingly supportive of Trump, and yet the so-called leadership is so divided in their support of him?

I doubt the rank and file overwhelmingly support Trump. I think you can count his real supporters on two hands, and maybe a foot. The overwhelming majority of Republicans in the House and Senate support nobody but themselves. They pay lip-service to Trump but they don't like, respect, or fear him. They DO fear his base, so they keep their feelings towards him hidden to avoid being primaried out of office.
