Surgeon General begs Fox News viewers to wear a face mask and insists 'we are not trying to take away your freedoms'

Surgeon General Jerome Adams begged Fox News' audience on Monday to wear face masks to help contain the spread of the coronavirus and to avoid thinking of the health measure as a violation of their rights.

Adams stressed that President Donald Trump has recently said he supports mask-wearing, despite his refusal to implement a federal mask mandate.

"I'm pleading with your viewers, I'm begging you, please understand that we are not trying to take away your freedoms when we say wear a face covering," Adams said during a "Fox and Friends" interview.

He went on, "We are not trying to take away your ability to go out when we say keep restaurant capacity under 50%. We are saying if we do these things, we can actually open and stay open. We can get back to school, to worship, to jobs. We can do this."

"We are not trying to take away your ability to go out when we say keep restaurant capacity under 50%.“

No, you literally are saying that half the people who want to eat out at a particular restaurant cannot get a table.

Then wear one forever. Just don’t tell me to wear one.

I suppose you think you need to wear a mask while hiking or laying in the beach.

You are being manipulated. Yeah masks work. They train you to be a compliant subject. If they can get you to wear a mask on the beach, they can get you to do just about anything.

Comply. That’s the order of the day.

Expecting a cloth mask to stop a virus is like expecting to catching BBs with a hula-hoop.

That’s the science.

If good masks were essential, wouldn’t the governors have provided incentives to businesses making them and wouldn’t we now have an over supply of inexpensive, if not free masks?

My office requires everyone to wear a mask all day. We have at least two people out of about 15 that have tested positive. On the other hand I go to a church where literally nobody wears masks. We do other precautions but mask wearing isn’t one of them. Nobody at my church of about 200 families has gotten it.
Using your anecdotal evidence, it would appear that masks actually increase your chances of getting this disease.

“ N95 has a little flapper thing”

Not all do. Most actual respirators have in and out valves. Out going is not filtered. Which is not of concern when they are required.

Please don’t bust my bubble like that... I may be too old to handle the strain

Oh, Ok. I suggest laying off the Kool-Aid and putting on that thinking cap.

First, OUTER N95 layer (repeated as the inner layer which sandwiches the fine mesh between):

Second, inner FINE layer sandwiched between:

Third, T-shirt material, pretty much ALL non-N95 material, including surgical masks (which are, obviously, woven just a bit tighter):

The small dot to the right of the coronavirus graphic is the virus represented AT THE SAME SCALE (you may have to zoom in). N95 and surgical masks were shown to fail demonstrably at protecting heathcare workers from influenza, a virus LARGER than Coronavirus, available here:

Surgical Mask vs N95 Respirator for Preventing Influenza Among Health Care Workers

If surgical masks, N95 and "cloth facial coverings" can't possibly "physically" block a virus (aside from a tight facial seal, another matter of physics altogether), then masks have NOTHING to do with public health, correct?

Therefore, what, possibly, could they be used for in these mandates, hmmmMMMMM?

Note: NO, the N95 inset graphic is not to scale. It is merely representative. Don't be stupid.

The one MOST IMPORTANT thing all people could do is WASH THEIR HANDS!

Interestingly, the focus is only on masks.

Why isn’t he advocating for all stores had handwashing stations at their entrances and exits?

It’s not about the virus.

Yeah, yeah. The chain link/mosquito analogy.
But the thing is that mosquito is traveling by a vehicle large enough to not pass through.

Problem arises when the outside of that barrier becomes covered with mosquito vehicles and they are sent flying by a sneeze/cough/laugh/large exhalation. This scenario is worsened by lower grade cloth barriers.

So. Yes. Professional grade PPE does offer protection. Cloth barriers worn multiple times by idiots, not so much.

The value makes the mask safer for the wearer. Some masks don’t include because they are cheaper. Not a bug, a feature.

The problem is that if it doesn’t have the flapper, your breathing is even more obstructed, and the seal is harder to maintain, and the mask is likely to clog quickly.

The people who initially said masking was a bad idea for the general public were telling the truth then and they are lying now.

Zackly right. They won’t be happy until we’re running around in bunny suits that have to be replaced every other week. At our expense.

I agree with that. Ingraham had a pretty good rant on it the other day.

The ‘science’ on PPE and spray transmittal has been pretty much settled for a looooong time. That’s why Fauci and others back in March repeated what has been standard. Then it became a political and now it’s a full on wedge issue.

No they do not! The virus gets through these masks. These masks are very unhealthy. You like it, wear it, but you and your Fake News ilk have no say if I wear one.

This article is about wearing masks in the Hospital setting where you are in contact with people who are sick.

The second paragraph of this article says it all with respect to Universal Mask wearing.

“We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic.”

Now, several studies have shown that asymptomatic spreading is improbable which is less than unlikely.

The note you mention,

“A growing body of research shows that the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is strongly correlated with the duration and intensity of contact: the risk of transmission among household members can be as high as 40%, whereas the risk of transmission from less intense and less sustained encounters is below 5%.5-7 This finding is also borne out by recent research associating mask wearing with less transmission of SARS-CoV-2, particularly in closed settings.”

This makes no mention that face masks are helpful in preventing transmission to others, but rather than these masks “MIGHT” be helpful in preventing spread to the wearer. However, this statement doesn’t provide any evidence that mask wearing in the home would have prevented these transmissions, it just says they occured, then jumps to an unsubstantiated conclusion.
