Some folks are - literally - hard of hearing; deaf.
If a runner with a knife has the weapon in the right hand, drop down and to the runners left as you fire. Weapon in the left, drop right as you fire. The very motion and position of the weapon prevents the runner from striking you opposite the hand holding the blade.
And my point is that the cited Tueller Drill (you KNOW the definition/scenario) did not apply here. That’s all. If you extend that particular scenario waaaay beyond its definition, to any situation involving a blade, you might as well justify “he had a pencil sharpener and was hobbling toward me on his crutches from 200 feet away, so I just HAD to drop him.” Right, not!
I agree with all the rest you say.
As have I.
Agreed, moving offline and away from a threats strong side is good tactics. Of course, a weapib can quickly be shifted to opposite hand/side.
Having a fair amount of skill with a blade, I fully expect a threat with a knife in hand to be a lethal threat and as a near senior, I know my reaction time is slower than a yute, so time/distance equation gets pushed deeper in my tactical mind.
Awareness is crucial, tactics, essential, speed and accuracy necessary.
Oops. My bad. I don't see a jam now either. I think I may have been watching a different incident somehow.
Having now watched the right video, and allowing for the fish-eye lens effect, I think the officer was probably justified firing the first two shots. The second two were perhaps justified but she might have waited just a second or two more. I can't understand why she fired shots five and six.
Perhaps she thought the man was holding a gun and not a knife and was still capable of doing harm. It looked to me as if the perpetrator was on the ground before shot five was fired.
well, if the head is bobbign around too much shoot into the pelvic area and then take the voup de gras shot when they are on the ground and not able to advance as quickly.
One has to be very aware of their muzzle discipline.
Even in cases where it's ruled a "good shooting", you know that the perp or relatives will sue you. It's easier to defend when the perp isn't there to give his version of "I was trying to defend myself from police brutality".
Heres a link to a thread about the shooting I was mistakenly referring to.

No problem re. the jam. Thx for the link to the other thread.
Watching the vid a couple of times to find the jam earlier :), I also thought she could’ve taken a breather after the first two shots - the guy looked down and out... guess she was pumped up on adrenaline or who knows what state she was in. Perhaps trained to keep shooting until the end, Hollywood movie style... don’t think she was thinking he had a gun, though, because she told him to “drop the knife, drop it!” before shooting.
