Ok, so I have to decide whose political instinct to trust; President Trump’s, or “the former top executive leader of Suffolk County in New York.”?

Hmmm...

“IMO, Trump is fundamentally an open borders kind of guy.”

What a pile of dog crap.

President Trump is, and always has been, an America First President, but he’s not stupid.

The Left’s best hope of upending the President’s America First agenda would be to obtain disturbing video footage of tens of thousands of illegals being forcibly deported by Trump - along with nonstop fake news comparisons to Jews being loaded onto cattle cars by the Nazis - to pull on the heartstrings of the American people.

This bleeding heart shit is as old as the hills, and President Trump is not nearly dumb enough to get baited into ordering mass deportations - that would be the Left’s political dream come true.

There will be no mass deportations - certainly not the grown-up children of illegals who have no other home to return to - because President Trump’s parents didn’t raise a fool.

But you already knew all that.

This is a false choice. To do mass deportations, you have to locate these people. We are many decades removed from Operation Wetback. There is no political will to find them. All we can do is settle for the status quo ante, which is throw roadblocks in the way of them being able to obtain employment, such that they give up and leave the country. Note that Trump got the tax cuts through but not E-verify. His heart’s not in it. Bottom line is that in some ways, he’s a New York liberal constrained by the need to please his conservative base. People keep blaming Ivanka and Jared, but the real issue is Trump himself.

It's not that his heart is not in it as you say but the fact that every single person in Washington has been against him since day one. Sure, it's easy to whine about what he hasn't been able to accomplish but really, it's amazing that he has managed to do as much as he has with so many daggers buried deep in his back. I say "Well done President Trump!" I don't think that I have ever seen a man with more heart and love for this country than Donald J. Trump. If you disagree, please name one person who has worked harder to save America.

“ This is a false choice.“

The false choice I thought you were presenting was - either you must demand the forced deportation of 20 or 30 million illegals, or you are for [gasp!!!] amnesty.

If you weren’t saying that, then I’ll apologize for my overreaction and back off.

However, I don’t agree with you at all that Trump is “a NY liberal constrained by the need to please his conservative base“.

He is a true conservative (albeit a born-again version in some regards) who truly believes in the conservative causes that he champions, especially putting American jobs first.

Regarding illegals - especially those who have been here most of their lives - perhaps his heart isn’t in driving them out for the same reason my heart isn’t in it: the damage is done. Too much time has gone by.

Build the wall - reform the system to stem further bleeding. If you can incentivize some recent crossers to give up and go home, I certainly support that.

But this life-long conservative does not wish President Trump to sacrifice his Presidency on the alter of correcting decades old mistakes which can’t be corrected anyway. Stop the current bleeding.
