Bubba Wallace Booed at NASCAR All-Star Open, Cheered After Crash

Bubba Wallace took some heat before he competed in the NASCAR All-Star Open, which was the race to qualify for the main event at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday. AP Sports reporter Jenna Fryer covered the event and wrote on Twitter that fans booed Wallace when he was introduced. And when he crashed 17 laps into the race, the crowd began cheering.

"Bubba Wallace was also booed when he was introduced, and many cheered when he crashed," Fryer wrote. "NASCAR still has a lot of work to do to back up its position. The group Justice 4 Diversity held signs along Speedway Blvd. after the race." After the ace, Wallace called out Michael McDowell for causing him to crash and lose out on a chance to win $1 million. "Just disrespect. When you get hooked the right rear into the wall - I don't even need to see a replay," Wallace said. "People say [he's] one of the nicest guys in the garage. Can't wait for the God-fearing text he's going to send me about preaching and praising respect. What a joke he is."

Odds are this won't be the last time Wallace will be booed this season. The reason fans are upset with Wallace likely has to do with the noose investigation. While at the Talladega Superspeedway, NASCAR announced a noose was found in Wallace's garage stall, and it led to an investigation by the FBI. When the investigation ended, law enforcement determined the noose had been there since last year and that Wallace wasn't a victim of a hate crime. That led to fans attacking Wallace, claiming he made up the noose incident despite the fact he was not the person who made the claim.

Sounds appropriate for a race hustler like him.

Rowdy Roddy Piper never whinged when they booed him. He ate it up.

Local racing, on pavement or dirt, is far more exciting than NASCRAP. Usually, they run “heat races” to determine starting positions in the feature race. The feature race is usually 30 laps.

NASCRAP qualifies before race day. The Sunday race runs hundreds and hundreds of laps. Only the most diehard fans can sit through all those laps. And all the races are run on pavement. I’m told some of the “minor league” races are run on dirt, but I haven’t seen one.

Local dirt racing is just that - local. After the race, fans are invited to the pit area to converse with the drivers. Fans might know some of them. They’re the guys who fixed your plumbing, or your roof, or sold you an alternator at the local parts store. They all appreciate their fans.

The price of admission is seldom more than $20.00. Food and drink are reasonably priced. Longtime race fans would be happy to explain things to first timers. Many friendships are established in the grandstands.

Screw NASCRAP. Visit your local speedway this weekend.

He’s a heel now instead of a face.

But Roddy never cried or whined either.

Bubba, on the other hand...

Or maybe because Bubba called NASCAR fans simple minded.

How many people who walked in solidarity behind Bubba’s car now realize they participated in an idiot parade?

NASCAR drivers are owned by their sponsors and are happy to virtue signal for them. I doubt they don’t care about Wallace at all.

Kyle Busch has been booed for a decade. He just takes a bow when he wins. Not so much booing now as he approaches legendary status.

When they removed the competition between brands by having restrictor plates and the like like 7liter max engines, no superchargers or fuel injection, I lost my interest. Used to be win on sunday sell on monday. Now I cannot even tell what brand is actually running, they all look alike. Junior Johnson in his chevy, Fireball in his Pontiac, Lee Petty in his Olds, Richard in his Plymouth are long gone. Interesting that some of the manufacturers of the races of the past are plain gone: Olds, Pontiac, Plymouth for instance.

In NASCAR to be summarily booed is as much a coveted circumstance as being summarily cheered. . .it is the potential prelude to the transformation into a good guy hero. . (Darrel Waltrip, comes to mind). . .not unlike the WWE. . .in fact, same fan base. Of course, Bubba is too much of a big baby to recognize the chance to leverage it to big bucks. He should take a lesson from “The Iron Sheik” during Desert Storm. . .that dude played it perfectly.

Those were NASCAR’s Golden Days. They didn’t make anything on TV revenue, and the drivers stayed at the “Satellite Hotel,” completely accessible to their fans. They towed their cars to the track with a truck. They HAD to win to pay the bills.

Some drivers won the race two laps ahead of the field, and the best show on the track was the race for second or third.

The cars on the track looked like the cars in the parking lot, and were identical mechanically, save for safety bits and sponsor decals.

Money has done nothing for the sport I used to love. It has, in fact, destroyed it.

Visit your local speedway. You’ll have a great time!
