College Basketball Coaches Call for End to ACT, SAT Requirement. Leaders say the tests hurt poor and minority students, ask NCAA to make ‘immediate decision’

The nation’s leading men’s college basketball coaches’ association has called the SAT and ACT “longstanding forces of institutional racism” and wants them eliminated from use in determining athletes’ eligibility.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches made the move three days after naming its first-ever Black executive director, the former Division I coach Craig Robinson. It also came the month after the organization formed a Committee on Racial Reconciliation, co-chaired by Harvard coach Tommy Amaker and South Carolina coach Frank Martin.

The committee believes the two standardized tests “no longer have a place in intercollegiate athletics or higher education at large,” Amaker and Martin said in a joint statement Thursday. “This is an important step toward combating educational inequality in our country.”

The NCAA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

A spokesman for the College Board, which oversees the SAT, denied that the test is discriminatory and said that any objective measure of student achievement would shine a light on inequalities in the education system. He added that the College Board has asked colleges to equally consider students for admission who are unable to take the test due to Covid-19, and supports the NCAA reexamining its eligibility requirements.

A spokesperson for the ACT didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The NCAA requires incoming athletes in Division I or II sports to complete a series of requirements to be deemed academically eligible, including earning a qualifying score on either the ACT or SAT.

A proposal that accompanied the NABC news release Thursday noted the wider trend already under way to move away from the tests. Many four-year colleges and universities, including those in the Ivy League and Duke and Stanford, won’t require the tests for admissions in 2021.

Leaders say the tests hurt poor and minority students...

They certainly do hurt poor students, regardless of how much money they have.

Why doesn’t Amaker address that the high schools are failing and producing functional (and many non-functional) illiterates?

Colleges are no longer just for indoctrination.

Now they are in basically brain-washing students into anti-Americanism and Marxism.

Why should this request by the coaches association raise any eyebrows? There already is a way to circumvent the ACT/SAT requirement. Just go the junior college route. Spend a year or two at a juco and then walk into any college as a Rhodes Scholar. The coaches don’t like this method because they are denied the services of the alleged student-athlete for two years. Heck, a coach can lose his job in that period of time.

I guess we should just eliminate all standards.

Give them time.

*******The nation’s leading men’s college basketball coaches’ association has called the SAT and ACT “longstanding forces of institutional racism” and wants them eliminated from use in determining athletes’ eligibility. *******

Translation - We’re missing out on some good basketball playets because they’re too dumb to pass 6th grade...

I know, let’s drop the testing to get into the NASA space program and send illiterates into space too. What could go wrong?

Johnny is aboard the space station and can’t read the warning label on that valve...well I thought it was the shower...but don’t my tats look kewl?

Let’s drop the testing requirements at nuclear weapons and power facilities too. Who needs brains in there anyway. We have to be INCLUSIVE...

I can see it now...GM drops testing requirements for their designers and engineers too...who wants to test drive the new 2022 models? Raise your hand...anybody?

When does the insanity end?

Who needs education, anybody can build a ship, our navy will love the new models...

Smith $ Wesson drops high school diploma high school diploma requirements for its designers...what could go wrong?

Sure you can build a microwave with a 4th grade education...

I guess I better stop, I could sit here and list ludicrous examples for another 30 minutes. The point is, they want to allow professional basketball players who couldn’t spell half the words I just used...

This is not about racism...it’s about getting complete illiterates into high dollar basketball contracts. Who cares if the idiot can’t read the thing, he can sure shoot the hoops...

I hope he has the gumption to have a lawyer read it for him...

I know, drop the testing requirements for lawyers!

What could go wrong? It’s just a piece of paper...

You say, “Many students don’t score high on SAT/ACT and still do very well in college.” Prove it. What study or studies proves that point. Perhaps if you said those who don’t do well get by in racial studies, or women studies, or in Education departments, I might believe it.

So athletes get a pass while everyone else has to abide by the rule. Yeah that’ll hold up in court.

Coach, looking at a piece of paper: "I see you got an A in biology."

Player: "That's great. I didn't even know I was taking biology."

In a word, no. It’s all about destroying competency and achievement. Teacher don’t teach much of worth anymore and standardized test show that. So out they go, a d I don’t mean the incompetent teachers.

As far as the basketball players are concerned it’s more about getting the best team money can buy on the floor. Who cares if Jamal can read, he can do a 360 slam dunk from the foul line. “Nuff” said.

Amacker now there is a winner. Coached at my school. Took a preseason number 1 school to a 500 record. While under contract, Said he had to attend an out of state funeral which was a ruse as he negotiated a contract with Michigan where he lasted a few years. Last I heard he was coaching at Harvard.

I think he means this is what has been said about them for years. Historically Black kids do worse on all standardized test than Whites and Asian, including IQ tests. So the tests must be racist. That’s the only explanation allowed.

Instead of looking at the core reason that some minority groups, on average, have failed to achieve the level of academic success reached by “white”, east asian, south asian, middle eastern students, they want to jettison all standards. Except for the standard of athletic achievement and professional sports salaries. Let’s apply that standard to the NBA, MLB and NFL, and mandate that the leagues must employ 61% white players, 18% hispanic, 13% black and 6% asian, and 1% native Americans. With 7%% of the NBA comprised of black players, this will require a reduction of 82%. Fair is fair.
