Listening to a physics professor talk about infectious diseases is like listening to any other egghead expound on something they are not experts on.
Ask the people who actually are around sick and infectious people if masks work. Why are they wasting their effort of they don’t work?
So explain to us all why all these egghead studies haven’t convinced the healthcare providers to give up their masks. Or are they part of the big conspiracy to shut down the country to control us sheep?

Well I agree it is obvious that hospitals use masks for protections both for patients and medical personnel. But what we are observing now is ridiculous. Most people have the masks pulled down to expose their noses. Others hang them over one ear or strung around the neck. Off and on blah blah. In reality they become more dangerous to lay people who have not been taught how to prevent cross contamination.
Children are not able to wear masks well at all. People wear them outside and driving their cars.
That is why it really is silly to be making people wear masks.

They wear masks to prevent spreading relatively large pathogens such as bacteria, not viri which are so small they cannot be seen with an optical microscope.
That's why Doctors who regularly work around deadly viri wear sealed, positive air pressure suits to protect them.

Ok moron. When doctors wear masks they are single use. The are fit properly worn once and thrown out. They are combined with gown, gloves, sterile techniques and drapes and a face shield. You tell me how that is comparable to the reused snot rags worn in grocery stores
They wear the masks in operating rooms so the junior mint in their mouth doesn’t fly into the patient.
I have a cloth mask for shopping and an N95 for things like getting my hair cut. Neither mask is perfect but I’m not looking for perfection - I looking to increase the odds for myself and others around me.
Wearing masks while taking care of sick patients or in the OR is not the same as having to wear them just to go grocery shopping. If you’re coughing or sneezing stay home. If not, safe distance and ditch the stupid mask.
First: I haven't heard ANYONE even suggest the healthcare providers should give up their masks. There are many reasons they need them that have nothing to do with virus infections like influenza or Covid-19.
(and by the way, one point of the study in this paper was to prove that health care workers were NOT protected from viruses by either surgical or N95 masks.)

Medical professionals don't wear masks to protect the patients and they don't wear them to protect against viruses.
They remove them properly after leaving a room.
They wash their hands after removing them.
They dispose of them properly and rarely if ever wear them for more than a half hour.
The surgeon wears it to keep blood and other body fluids out of his mouth and nose. Same for the nurses.
Educate yourself on the protocols for Tuberculosis.
Actually talk to a health provider about what they were taught about masks. Do not be the moron you protest so strongly against. Learn something.
Physics is the perfect place to look when you hear about physical things and how they travel. If someone says “Masks prevent droplets from...” who better to ask? A virologist, an epidemiologist, a psychic? No, if the droplet is poison, water, bacterial, or viral, it's still a dang droplet - it will act as droplets do. It will not be more attracted to paper, cloth, or plastic just because it contains a virus. The only place I might look to that's better than the broad category of physics would by Aero and hydro dynamics. The droplet is not smart. Like you it just does what it does. In the case of the droplet it travels until stopped. In your case you bleats with the rest of the sheep. “Wear a mask to help someone else”
