One of the major problems with the 3 gorges dam is the amount of silt it backs up and holds behind it every year. The more silt it holds back the shallower the reservoir and less water its containing, the higher and faster the water rises.
That dam is a marvel, but way too many questions about the quality of it have come to light to ever really trust it, especially on a fault zone like it is.
If that thing fails, China as we know it will stop existing the next day. No budget can withstand the repairs downriver caused by that thing catastrophically failing now.

I now wonder why dams systems are not built with upstream particulate collectors that can be perhaps seasonally cleaned out. I’m not aware of any dams that have such structures upstream.
