IMMOKALEE, Fla. (AP) — When much of the world was staying at home to slow the spread of the new coronavirus, Elbin Sales Perez continued to rise at 4:30 a.m. to report to his landscaping job in a rural Florida town.

Now, a couple of months later, as state-imposed restrictions are lifted and Floridians begin to venture out, the Guatemalan immigrant is ill and isolated at home with his wife and children in Immokalee, a poverty-stricken town in the throes of one of the sharpest COVID-19 upticks in the state.

“We had to work. If we don’t, then who does it?” said Sales Perez, 31, who noted that his job was deemed essential. “We had to battle every day with the threat of the virus looming, until we caught it.”

Immokalee is among several immigrant communities in Florida — and numerous rural areas across the U.S. — that have recently experienced outbreaks of the coronavirus.

My daughter is an ER Nurse in Florida. I worry for her safety. She is at a rural hospital in an area with a large Hatian population.

Here in LA the amount of new cases have gone through the roof, why, because of the damn protestors/looters..and of course, those crossing from the Mexico border..but did anyone stop the protests from happening, nah, the AMA said “protests are essential” now we all have to suffer because of them

LOL! They would have been safer if they stayed in Guatemala. I guess illegal immigration isn't always risk-free.

Why do you assume he is here illegally? He very likely is here on a work visa for agriculture.

The surge in AZ is in 4 counties, 2 on the Mexican border, 2 with large Native American populations

I had to work....in a hospital...with covid germs running around....not complaining...so far so good....

this lockdown has been financially very unfair and uneven...

the poor kids who work at McDonalds get minimum wage while some other low level job holder gets to stay home and receive more money from the govt then their wages...

perhaps all of us who are essential should be given a tax holiday....now that would be fair....

"Same for Arizona, California and Texas. Dirty little secret about the surges in these states."

Same here in Washington State - the big surge has been in Yakima County, a farming area with lots of migrant workers.

He got the virus while landscaping?

He probably got it living in a 2BR apartment where 8-10 people live. At least that's the case in my county. The "migrant" neighborhood in one town has contributed half of the county's cases. High-density living aids the spread.

PANIC PORN!

There is so much wrong with this...

All of us will get the virus eventually. Mother Nature’s Herd immunity demands it!

He is not dying on a ventilator

He would have caught it in whatever country he was in.

Same for Memphis, surrounding counties who don’t work there are at normal rate.

Starting school will be a nightmare, it’s hard to get those Dem Union workers to work.
