From what I’ve been told by an old friend who was born there, shortly after the Blacks took power in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, the first thing they did was to take all of the big corporately run farms and divide them into 1-acre subsistence farms which were given to the locals.
Since there was no way that 100 1-acre farms could produce like 1 100-acre farm due to economy of scale, it was a doomed idea from the start. Nevermind that half of the “farmers” had no skills in agriculture to begin with!

There could be some truth here. When I worked in Afghanistan after 911 I noticed the international development staff made no effort to train Afghans real skills of leadership, project management, and program design. So I did. Consequently I did not have to be replaced with another international consultant when I left jobs.

Zimbabwe had the advantage of seeing how this played out in the former British possessions in East Africa and West Africa decades before; they still chose to proceed with their “all or nothing” takeover rather than accept a scheduled transition to black rule.
Many blacks fought in the Rhodesian Army; they were the ones who wanted a non-communist country when blacks took power. Needless to say, they lost.
As I understand it, some prime farms were given to Mugabe allies - but they didn’t run them at all. For the white farms still operating, Mugabe thugs would beat and chase away their black workers, so their output fell.
Immigration today is driven by non-whites desperately trying to get into lands run by white people; they all can see “independence” and “self-determination” were a farce. Instead of serving colonial masters, they served whichever native masters had gone to college in white countries. They DID have educated leaders who understood economics - and those leaders looted the new countries for their own benefit.
I’d think they would have learned something over the past 40 years...

They should have learned it before seeking abrupt independence; Ian Smith could easily rally his supporters by simply pointing out what happened in other newly independent African countries such as Nigeria and Congo (the civil wars that broke out in both killed a LOT of people and destroyed much infrastructure).
Mandela learned it; when apartheid was overturned he pleaded with whites not to leave, and apparently granted enough concessions for many to stay. His death marked the real end of that spirit, and relations have taken a turn for the worse since.
