DETROIT – One of the great tragedies of COVID-19 is the disproportionate impact it’s had on the Black or African American community.
According to state officials, despite being only 14% of Michigan’s population, Black people make up 30% of all coronavirus cases and 40% of COVID-19 related deaths.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she believes those numbers are because of uneven health care delivery and signed an Executive Directive to develop rules to require implicit bias training for health professionals to address racial disparities.
The governor’s task force said people of color suffer in medical settings from the unconscious bias by medical professionals.
She turned to Dr. Randolph Rasch, Dean and Professor of the Michigan State University College of Nursing, who spoke extensively about what implicit bias is. Rasche said it’s an evolutionary human self-defense mechanism, but “because it is so frequently associated with race, it has the implications of thinking that we’re accusing someone of being racist. The key is that it is unconscious.”
Implicit biases also deals with weight, gender and even how attractive someone is.
He said implicit biases, in a medical setting in particular, leads to negative unconscious thought and lesser for some, and even no treatment for others.
Rasch and the task force believes that causes unnecessary deaths.
“It is especially important in how we gather a history, how we do physical exams, how we make decisions about the data and how we use that to work with patients to develop the best health care they need,” Rasch said.
The practical impact of Executive Directive 2020-7 means those looking to get a new license or wants to renew their medical license will have to undergo bias training.

Obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, smoking, lack of exercise...comorbidity factors that are higher in the black general population than the whites’ (go search on it if you doubt me; I’ve done so).

Whitmer is just rounding up as many ginnea pigs for drug testing. If she was concerned about weight she wouldn’t have locked the residents of Michigan inside for months and making even gardening illegal.MI is a go to state for Democrat experiments and social causes.I wonder where all the flooded out Midland residents are today I’m sure they are social distancing wherever they are.

I think the difference will be found in two areas having nothing to do with discrimination.
One is that the black population is not uniform across the state, and then there is the proportion of blacks concentrated in some of Michigan’s most densely populated and largest cities, like Detroit. In every state the case numbers and death numbers are highest in those areas where the population per square mile is greatest, regardless of race. No matter what might have been the ethnic composition of Detroit, given its population density it was bound to transmit infections more rapidly than lees densely populated areas. By county, the county that includes Detroit has the most cases and deaths compared to other counties in Michigan.
That blacks comprise such a large portion of Detroit’s population (78%), their greater case numbers there are not a matter of discrimination. They are simply a factor of greater population density. You are not likely to find as great a number of cases for blacks per every 1,000 people, as can be found in Detroit, if looking at case numbers of blacks in less densely populated areas of Michigan.
There was no discrimination against Detroit either. It simply has more people at a high population density.
I have looked chronic health issue data by race in Michigan. The only Wuhan Virus comorbidity factor showing a great difference by “race” is with obesity - about 39% of blacks, vs 28% for whites. That one thing could be part of where greater number and rates of deaths for blacks is coming from in Michigan.
But the Michigan governor cannot do as we have and use data, science and logic to look at why any differences exist. That would be analyzing the issue. Instead, in doing as her new political masters (BLM) want she has to go directly to their simplistic answer - its all “systemic racism”.
