Victory in Afghanistan would involve wiping out most of the population.
I’m OK with that, but the American public is not.
We need to leave, never should have gone in.
Nobody has ever tamed Afghanistan and no one ever will.

The same was said about victory against Japan.
Perhaps something is wrong with the American public. Sounds like a crisis of faith to me.
