First of all the Russians didn’t invade Crimea. It is predominately Russian and has a Russian naval base since 1783.
You might be right in a sense that it was Obama’s ambassador in Ukraine backing a coup to remove legit elected government and install anti-Russian puppet.
If not for this stupid move the Russians could have still had Crimea although under formal Ukrainian jurisdiction.
The coup was a trigger for formal annexation.
