On my mom’s side at least, my ancestors didn’t come to the US until the late 1880s. And they grew wheat, not cotton, and picked it themselves.

I only had one ancestor here prior to 1900 and he fought for the union in the civil war. The rest were just hungry Irish looking for a better life. The country did well by them.

My dad didn’t come here until after the Japanese concentration camp in.............wait for it-—China. He came in about 1946 after WW2, he was a high school student.

Beat me to it. My father's father didn't arrive from Germany until the 1870s. My mother's heritage is murkier, but they were small farmers in the northwest.
