Vindicated? Trump-touted COVID-19 drug hydroxychloroquine works, according to new study
Just the News ^ | July 2,2020 | By Sharyl Attkisson

The large-scale analysis, conducted by Henry Ford Health System, was published Thursday in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Infectious Diseases.

The study examined 2,541 patients who had been hospitalized in six hospitals between March 10 and May 2, 2020.

More than twenty-six percent (26.4%) of patients who did not receive hydroxychloroquine died.

But among those who received hydroxychloroquine, fewer than half that number — 13% — died.

More than 90% of the patients received hydroxychloroquine within 48 hours of admission to the hospital. Scientists say giving the drug early during illness may be a key to success.

The study’s authors also found one concern flagged in previous reports about hydroxychloroquine did not materialize: heart-related adverse events.

"The data here is clear that there was benefit to using [hydroxychloroquine] as a treatment for sick, hospitalized patients," said Dr. Steven Kalkanis of Henry Ford Health System.

The study scientists point out that other reports about hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus that had less positive, mixed, or negative results studied different populations; administered hydroxychloroquine later during illness; used different doses, and/or were not peer-reviewed.

Scientists say giving the drug early during illness may be a key to success.

This is precisely what Zelenko, Raoult, and East Virginia Medical School have been saying for MONTHS.

Additional support is good even if it is late.

Two studies, the one out of the Ford system and another from NYC area.

Risk Factors for Mortality in Patients with COVID-19 in New York City
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11606-020-05983-z

Conclusions
Among patients with COVID-19, older age, male sex, hypotension, tachypnea, hypoxia, impaired renal function, elevated D-dimer, and elevated troponin were associated with increased in-hospital mortality and hydroxychloroquine use was associated with decreased in-hospital mortality.

n= 6493, so a big study group.

The study scientists point out that other reports about hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus that had less positive, mixed, or negative results studied different populations; administered hydroxychloroquine later during illness; used different doses, and/or were not peer-reviewed.

This explanation of the flaws of other studies and analyses mentions different dosages but fails to mention that many (most? all?) other studies omitted a critical part of the drug cocktail - zinc.

Hypotension?

Is that a typo? Shouldn’t that be hypertension?

Doubt it. Hypotension = low blood pressure.

From what I could glean from these studies is that they waited until the patient was already in the ICU and on a ventilator. The patient was already effectively dead.

Key Results
A total of 858 of 6493 (13.2%) patients in our total cohort died: 52/2785 (1.9%) ambulatory patients and 806/3708 (21.7%) hospitalized patients. Cox proportional hazard regression modeling showed an increased risk of in-hospital mortality associated with age older than 50 years (hazard ratio [HR] 2.34, CI 1.47–3.71), systolic blood pressure less than 90 mmHg (HR 1.38, CI 1.06–1.80), a respiratory rate greater than 24 per min (HR 1.43, CI 1.13–1.83), peripheral oxygen saturation less than 92% (HR 2.12, CI 1.56–2.88), estimated glomerular filtration rate less than 60 mL/min/1.73m2 (HR 1.80, CI 1.60–2.02), IL-6 greater than 100 pg/mL (HR 1.50, CI 1.12–2.03), D-dimer greater than 2 mcg/mL (HR 1.19, CI 1.02–1.39), and troponin greater than 0.03 ng/mL (HR 1.40, CI 1.23–1.62). Decreased risk of in-hospital mortality was associated with female sex (HR 0.84, CI 0.77–0.90), African American race (HR 0.78 CI 0.65–0.95), and hydroxychloroquine use (HR 0.53, CI 0.41–0.67).

I forgot the numbers, but a survey said only a minority of democrats would take HCQ where over half of republicans would.

I understand it I’d low blood pressure. But everything written so far about COVID has been about the exacerbating effects of high blood pressure.

Whoa...that is the exact opposite of what we’ve been told for months now. It’s been nonstop “Minorities and women hardest hit.”

Wow...easy on the eyes...and then she opens her mouth. First the New York accent, then the anger and finger pointing, then the foul mouth cursing. You won’t find her under the definition of “lady like.”

This study did not include zinc either.
