Yes it is a food additive amongst others. Incorporated into many animal feed in order to prevent spoilage etc. also used as an anti oxidant in many products. For example if you put some into olive oil, or any other kind, it will keep it from going rancid.

I have been using it off and on for many years whenever a flu bug made its rounds including right now with the corona virus and so far had no problems. Matter of fact many years ago some company even took a patent out on it for its LIPID COATED VIRUS killing ability, this should tell you something. But since then the patent expired and the cost for repeating any human tests would be way too expensive and the costs could never be recovered. For this reason pharmaceutical companies don’t even go near it.

It is too bad when poorly informed humans rad the word TOLUENE, some are liable to get a panic attack. Even so if you would try to get any toluene out of BHT you could not recover even a microgram. There is plenty of information about it out there, all one has to do is devote some time to it. But a good portion of the American public forgot how to think for themselves and expect everything handed to them with an iron clad guarantee and should something o wrong file a lawsuit.

If it is still available you may want to watch the following on YouTube...BHT and Coronavirus | LIFE EXTENSION BOOK RESEARCH
In the meantime stay healthy an well my friend.
