Emancipation Day is pretty important. 300,000+ soldiers in blue died for it too.
By June 19, 1865, many, if not most of the slaves in the Confederacy had already been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation. Slaves held in Union states would have to wait until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December, 1865 to be freed. And those held by some Indian tribes would have to wait even longer.
