True, in theory, but not that I’ve seen in reality. It’s basically the difference between what ‘could’ happen and what ‘has happened’, and the second of the two seems to be far stronger for motivating our side and depressing their side. Look at 2010 and 1994 for examples. Our side kept saying that both Obama and Clinton are hard-core leftists (i.e., what could happen), but the middle of the country didn’t believe it, and so they got elected. Two years later, after seeing it first hand (i.e., what has happened), only THEN did they figure it out, at least as far as the midterms were concerned (of course they didn’t carry that anger through the re-election of those two - but that’s another area).
If Trump wins, I’ll just write off Roberts as another Souter, and accept the fact that the best that our side can do at the Supreme Court level is get it right about 75% of the time - which is still far better than the 0% that the Dems give us.
