Actual debates only help the challenger to the incumbent. If Joe Biden is too incompetent to come face to face with President Trump, or will show very badly in any event, this becomes a forfeit. While not exactly a win, it is not a loss either.

One is reminded of a sweating and visibly ill Richard Nixon facing a fresh and exuberant John F. Kennedy. On points of debate, Nixon won the arguments presented, but lost on the overall scoring by the American public, and the media.

Whether the debates are held or not, the media will say that Biden won them (just like they claimed that he won the debate against Paul Ryan).

Maybe the Democrats will agree to the debates only if they get to pick the moderators (Rachel Maddow, Don Lemon, and Joy Behar).
