The judge named in that article is a magistrate judge. That's not a real judge. She will basically just be deciding bail. A real judge will be hearing the case.

That is correct. A federal magistrate can only sit for misdemeanors trials and then only with the consent of the defendant. Felonies must be tried by a District Court judge.
