Democrats warn against overconfidence in fight against Trump

President Donald Trump is entering the final four-month stretch before Election Day presiding over a country that faces a public health crisis, mass unemployment and a reckoning over racism. His Democratic challenger, Joe Biden, is raking in cash. And a series of national and battleground polls suggests growing obstacles to Trump's reelection.

Biden and his leading supporters are stepping up warnings to Democrats to avoid becoming complacent. Former President Barack Obama and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer insist that plenty could change between now and Nov. 3 and that the party must be vigilant against Trump, who knows few boundaries when it comes to his political foes.

“We understand that what happens five months before the election and what happens at the election can be very different things,” Whitmer said.

Michigan was one of the Midwestern states that Trump carried by a razor-thin margin in 2016, helping him win the Electoral College even as he lost the popular vote. Other Democrats in the state say the strength of the president's support shouldn't be underestimated.

“If the election were held today, I think Biden would win Michigan,” said Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell. “But the Trump supporters are out there, and they’re still intense.”

Obama underscored that point this week during his first joint fundraiser with Biden.

Don’t you think that if it’s true that “Trump has nothing to gain from a debate” with Joe Biden, then his campaign is in a world of trouble?

World of trouble? No. It's a recognition of Trump's strengths and weaknesses. He does not do well in interviews or debate formats.

I’m just not seeing how Trump couldn’t benefit overall with Biden being in his current condition.

Earlier this week, Hannity teed up an incredibly simple question - what are your priorities for a second term? His answer is in the clip included in this Snopes entry. If his answer to a softball question like that is incomprehensible mish-mosh and nowhere near the point of the question, then what is he going to do when some liberal media talking head is asking him questions? You're going to have the media questioning his mental acuity rather than Biden's.

Win the election by playing to Trump's strengths and avoiding his weaknesses. Trump is not a communicator, he's a doer. Let his actions speak for him. He can play to the base in two hour rallies but he can't seem to give a concise answer. Don't make him have to.

There won’t be any in person debates. That is the point of this whole fake Covid hype by the media.

Second part is false. He cleans up.

Does he now? I beg to differ.

People who don't like his tweets or his rally style also don't like his debate style.

How he communicates in Tweets and at rallies is no reflection on how he will do in a debate where he has to give a clear, concise answer in about a minute. Based on his recent TV interviews I don't think he can do that.

You win campaigns by playing up a candidates strengths and avoiding his weaknesses. Trump, as I pointed out earlier, is a doer. He's not a communicator. He doesn't do empathy or kumbaya moments. He gets things done. He doesn't need to explain that. Emphasize accomplishments and avoid areas he doesn't do well at.

The problem is, Trump’s strength was the economy.

That’s all gone now, because of China Virus.

True.

That’s all gone now, because of China Virus.

It's taken a big hit, no doubt. But for all that in polls on what areas people prefer one candidate over another Trump still out-polls Biden on who people think can handle the economy better. If the economy and unemployment show steady improvement between now and the election then that could be the difference between people choosing Trump over Biden.

Hence all the lockdowns, the Democrats will continue these lockdowns, and their agent provocateurs will make sure even states like Texas, keep up their cases. That’s why they targeted Houston for the Floyd funeral.

DT will be on the defensive the whole night.

That WILL be interesting to watch.

We will see a whole new Trump, as he's been on offense for the last 4 or 5 years straight.

Remember the Megan Kelly/Rosie O'Donnell question?

Well, your point about the hostile moderators is valid and if they are smart and evil they will ask the questions that Trump can't answer well. Like the empathy and kumbaya moments. But I look at his performances in coronavirus briefings and he was able to control a lot of the narrative away from grandma who died a tragic death, etc.

Frankly nobody will care much about the weepy media's fake concern about the death toll by the fall. They will all have grief fatigue. They will have seen every "young and healthy" victim's story in the newspaper. It's all BS. More younger people die from flu. They will get another black guy beaten to death by a cop and blame that on Trump. But the fake racism is all the same as 2016.

Trump is not Hitler anymore, he is much much worse than Hitler. We would want Hitler instead of Trump, etc. Yeah, we got it.

And towards injecting Clorox? The media managed to spin that answer, they'll do the same with any meandering answer he gives at the debates.

Yeah, if Trump said I should inject Clorox I certainly would. Of course he didn't say that. Most people realize the fake news makes that stuff up and they ignore it. When they make it up after the debates, nobody will believe them except for the usual crowd who have no intent to vote for anyone other than the media's choice.

Words just elude me. I’ll take Trump’s communication skills over Biden any day. Hell I’ll take his communication skills over any democrat today.
