Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating a possible hate crime after an 18-year-old Black woman was set on fire.
On Wednesday morning, Althea Bernstein was driving through downtown Madison when she stopped at a red light. Bernstein was sitting at the intersection with her window down when she heard someone yell a racial slur, she told police, CBS News reports.
Moments later, she told police four white men appeared, with one spraying a liquid on her face and neck and throwing a flaming lighter at her. Bernstein told police she was able to drive away and put out the flames, but when she returned home, her mother encouraged her to go to the hospital, where she was treated for burns.
According to hospital staff, the liquid thrown on Bernstein is believed to be lighter fluid.
The following day, Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway released a statement calling the attack a hate crime.
"The City received a report of a violent racially-motivated hate crime that occurred downtown around 1:00 am on June 24, where a group of pedestrians used a racial slur and then lit a woman on fire through her car window as she stopped at an intersection. This is a horrifying and absolutely unacceptable crime that I will not tolerate in Madison," Rhodes-Conway said.
"While we are still learning more about the details, current information suggests this may have been a premeditated crime targeted toward people of color, which makes the incident even more disturbing."

As someone who has used a Zippo lighter for nearly 50 years I can tell you that YES the naptha fluid for those wick type lighters is very irritating to the skin.
On several occasions in my youth I overfilled my lighter. About 30 minutes after putting the lighter in my pocket the fluid had soaked my pants pocket and was burning my skin. It produced markings exactly like hers.
Naptha is VERY irritating to the skin.
This gal wasn’t burned. Someone put naptha on her face or she did it herself to get some attention.

Also a life long Zippo user of both the traditional and the pipe versions. Can confirm overfilling with Zippo fluid makes “burn” marks just like that. Many a time my poor right pocket has been the source of a nasty but largely temporary leg burn. I have a belt holder for Zippo lighters it genius solves the problem.

Because of the panicdemic, many people are using alcohol-based hand sanitizer. You have to be careful to let the alcohol evaporate before coming close to an open flame, as when lighting a cigarette or joint. It will catch fire...I’ve seen it happen.
Maybe she used it on her face too.

The beyond stupid Mayor has chimed in. That plus it’s Madigastan so there is a vested interest that the truth never comes out.
One: She is not black and would not be identified as black in a car by someone on the sidewalk. She is at most “High Yaller.” Two; Racial attack hoax is very trendy right now. It is fashionable to be “attacked” by someone “using a racial slur,” the racial slur being the most serious part of the “attack.” These folks are caught out pretty close to 100% of the time and must expect to be caught out so that would seem to be part of the trend. the burn marks would seem to be more of a fashion statement than anything else. I am not about to give this fraud the benefit of any doubt.
