Sweden's top virus expert has said the 'world went mad' with coronavirus lockdowns which 'fly in the face of what is known about handling virus pandemics'.
Anders Tegnell, who advised Sweden to avoid full lockdown in favour of a 'herd immunity' strategy, said world leaders caved to political pressure amid panic - and that the crippling economic downsides of lockdown will far outweigh the benefits.
Sweden has confirmed 68,390 cases of coronavirus and 5,230 deaths - far above its Nordic neighbours, but its economy is intact and actually posted slight growth in the first quarter of this year.
Tegnell also hit out at the WHO after it placed Sweden on a list of 11 countries seeing a 'dangerous resurgence' in the virus, saying it had 'totally misinterpreted' the data.
He said a 'surge' in cases over the last week is actually the result of more testing, meaning mild cases that previously went undetected are now being counted.
Southern US states, Brazil and India are also seeing soaring case numbers currently - which leaders in those countries have also blamed on increased testing.
Tegnell pointed to a steady fall in deaths, hospital admissions and ICU admissions as evidence that Sweden's outbreak is actually retreating, not getting worse.
It comes after WHO Europe director Hans Henri Kluge warned in a press conference on Thursday of 11 European countries were at risk of seeing their healthcare systems overwhelmed by a surge in infections.
The WHO later revealed Sweden was on that list, alongside Armenia, Moldova, North Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine and Kosovo.
Tegnell said: 'It's a total misunderstanding, I would say.
'They have looked at the number of cases per day and it has increased steeply over the past week.

'They have looked at the number of cases per day and it has increased steeply over the past week.
'This is entirely due to extended testing and that we find more mild cases. We see no evidence at all that our epidemic in Sweden is getting worse - on the contrary.
'It is unfortunate that people are confusing Sweden with countries that have not previously had problems, which are obviously in the beginning. Sweden is nearing the end.'

I’ll never make fun of Sweden again.
He’s absolutely right.
More and more I am convinced that the global statists and Marxists are trying to achieve their economic goals that they could not pass through the “Green Revolution” by using COVID fear mongering.
There is no way around herd immunity. Get it fast like Sweden or drag it out over a loner time like the US. The end result will be roughly the same. Perhaps the death toll will be somewhat lower if the slow route is taken and hospitals do not become overwhelmed.
That’s debatable because there is a death toll associated with lockdowns.
Flattening a curve just makes the linear distance longer between the start and end points.
From the Daily Telegraph:
The most stable data source is the number of new admissions to intensive care,” Anders Tegnell said, “and there we have seen a decline since a long time back. Now it’s just a few admissions a day in Stockholm, and in a few other regions.”
Countries across Europe, including its neighbours Denmark, Norway and Finland, have refused to allow leisure travel to and from Sweden as a result of the high number of recent confirmed cases.
“It is certainly serious, especially in this situation where there are a lot of discussions going on about what countries people can travel to, this sort of statement is extremely unfortunate.”
“The number of admissions to intensive care is at a very low level and even deaths are starting to go down,” Mr Tegnell said.
“We are now down to a level where there are not more people dying now than during the same weeks in previous years.”
According to Sweden’s Public Health Agency, around 10 coronavirus patients a day are being admitted to intensive care units, compared with 45-50 a day in April.
In the past month, Sweden has more than doubled its Covid-19 testing and only began offering mass testing to the public last week, a delay which has been highly criticised.
i will still make fun of sweden, but my admiration has grown for them.
Anyway, for this reason, those in government will always push for more control, stature, and importance of government. ALWAYS. A pandemic gives them that control and importance, and of course they will jump at the chance to exploit it.
As a very important additional factor, Trump isn't just the American President. He is the person who has shown the world how feckless, stupid, and unethical politicians ALL AROUND THE WORLD are. He diminishes their stature, and has shown that people from the private sector, and not those from academia etc., are immensely more talented and effective, even over a shorter term, than those laughable imbeciles around the globe who love to stick their faces in front of microphones and cameras.
Wars are always fought because of those in government (usually a totalitarian oligarchy), and their pitiful little lives have caused the deaths of millions. That, is the legacy of politicians.
Term limits, and absolutely NO career politicians is what we need, in addition to having every single bureaucrat in the nation vetted and hired directly by revolving groups of citizens - with zero input or veto power of those working in or directing those government bureaucratic agencies (i.e. Joe the Plumber tells Peter Stzrok who he's going to be working with - even if it's one of those ‘smelly’ Walmart shoppers he derided).
No kidding. They are the only ones who have shown any intestinal fortitude through this madness. They even had the temerity to arrest and haul away the BLM disrupters who were trying to block the streets
Go Sweden? I never thought Id be praising those pseudo Commies - but good for them. We are much worse ...
Sweden’s government also claims there aren’t any no-go zones there, so their credibility is right there next to Adam Schiff.
So you doubt their sharply declining ICU numbers?
Then compare them with stats from other civilized countries.
