I guess they took "knot tying" very seriously. I would think it was an anachronism on modern ships, unless they were actual sailing vessels.

in the late 60’s it was or seemed to be as important as staying afloat after going over board.
Drown proofing was a big deal then too

These CG Rescue Swimmers of today simply amaze me to no end with their stamina and ability.
