A 1931 cable from the U.S. Embassy in Berlin documented a discussion between Walter Duranty and American diplomat A.W. Klieforth. Duranty had gone to the embassy to renew his passport. Klieforth reported that, during that visit, Duranty had told him “that, ‘in agreement with the New York Times and the Soviet authorities,’ his official dispatches always reflect the official opinion of the Soviet government and not his own.”
