What’s your risk from coronavirus? Lower than we think, new study suggests

But critics say the study oversimplified answers to one of COVID-19’s most vexing questions

Months into the new coronavirus pandemic, researchers are grappling with an urgent question: How much risk do we have of catching COVID-19 — or dying from it — from our chance encounters?

The debate has flared as authorities find themselves alternately accused of moving too fast or not fast enough in easing restrictions so more business and activity can resume.

Overall, it’s probably less now than many likely believe, given the daily drumbeat of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths, according to new research this month by a pair of medical scientists at Stanford University and UCLA.

“Across the country, current probabilities of infection transmission, hospitalization, and death from COVID19 vary substantially, yet severe outcomes are still rare events,” the study said. “Individuals may be overestimating their risks of hospitalization and death and a moderate number and frequency of community contacts is unlikely to overwhelm hospital capacity in most U.S. settings.”

The study found a 50-to-64-year-old person who has a single random contact has, on average, a 1 in 852,000 chance of being hospitalized or a 1 in 19.1 million chance of dying based on rates as of the last week of May.

“We were surprised how low the relative risk was,” Klausner said.

The study assumes the same risk for every individual, even though it is known to be higher in certain regions, occupations and residential settings where there have been repeated outbreaks — meat-packing plants, nursing homes, health care jobs, jails and prisons. The study also did not account for a person’s pre-existing health conditions.

For Freepers living in Marxist CA. This is a must see video that pertains to Mullah Newsom’s, wannabe dictator, mandate that masks must be worn by everyone in CA starting at age 3 up. Mullah Newsom’s mandate is a violation of our Constitutional rights!

Well said .

I am stocked up and defensive. Old enough to not be afraid to die for a worthwhile cause. I would rather go down easy fighting for liberty, than to spend my last 10 years of life as a beat down coward

I am 67, have metastatic prostate cancer and Type II diabetes, but take 24,000 iu of Vitamin D3, 1,000 mg of metformin twice per day, Zinc, a fair large dose of Vitamin C, plus some other supplements to help my immune system. I also don’t do stupid stuff which might greatly increase my chances of getting it, but I am living my normal life.

I don’t think I’m going to be getting Covid-19, and if I do, my immune system is already in pretty good shape. Just need to add HCQ which my wife has a prescription until I can get my own, and Z-Pac.

“We were surprised how low the relative risk was,”

That’s because you’ve been watching CNN and MSNBC.

It would be tough for coronavirus to be less risky than I think without it actually being good for you.

.......”unlikely to overwhelm hospital capacity in most U.S. settings”......

Our Hospital is laying off workers.....the shut down caused more financial damage to our medical system here than the virus even came close to. Hardly any cases throughout the crisis.....

So since hospitals are able to handle now they need to just open everything up!

You are right. It is real. I know 3 people who died from it. Their last days were pitiful

Stop with that talk about “80” as I’ll be 79 on October 1 and stopped driving drunks home late at night with Uber March 16. And thinking about how I have emphysema/COPD from 42 years of intensive cigarette smoking until 2004, not to mention overweight with type 2 diebetes and high blood pressure. I’ve got one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel !!!

Those plastic shields will help from becoming infected much better than any homemade mask ever could.
