Emotions are running high in our country following the police killing of George Floyd by officer Derek Chauvin in Minneapolis. The usual political lines have been drawn, protests have filled the streets, and violent rioters and looters have run roughshod through our cities. There are too many moving pieces for a simple explanation of what’s happening on the ground, or for a simple political solution.

Enter Philadelphia native and activist Maj Toure.

Maj Toure is the antidote to phony white progressives.

The founder of Black Guns Matter has big plans for a libertarian upsurge in our urban centers — and his approach to personal responsibility through firearms training could be a game-changer.

It would help his cause to get rid of the silly looking baseball cap. This being said, I wish someone would give him the idea of “legally arming neighborhoods on a budget”:

1) Mass purchase inexpensive .22 pistols and boxes of 22LR ammo. Have every gun engraved “Property of (parent organization,) reward if found”. Optimally the engraved pistol and ammo would be about $500 a set. Here’s the zinger: 100 SETS would only cost $50,000, which is peanuts. Training in proper maintenance and use should be by volunteers, and mandatory to get a set.

2) Survey a neighborhood to find apartments or homes with NO felons in them, and who are willing to have a gun for home defense, maybe 1 in 4. Just one block (100 sets) of guns could radically improve the security in a neighborhood of 400 residences. For just $50,000. Lasting security. A single rookie policeman costs a LOT more than that, for just ONE year. And they typically work in three shifts a day.

3) Every time one of these guns is lost or stolen and later used in a crime, it points right to the authorized owner of the gun to explain why they didn’t report it as lost or stolen.

Actually, Maj Toure is wrong about cop-black encounters that go fatally bad - they are NOT disproportionate, when the standard of comparison is the proportion of all cop-black encounters vs the proportion of cop encounters with any demographic group. The seeming disproportion of cop-black encounters that go fatally bad is a reflection of the disproportionately higher crime rate for blacks when it comes to murder, rape and armed robbery.

However, what Maj Toure is doing will reduce the crime rate in the black community, by arming the community against the thugs within it (blacks are not just the largest % of criminals in some areas, they are largely victims in those areas as well). As the work of Maj Toure reduces the crime rate in the black community, the rate of cop-black encounters gone fatally bad will go down as well.

Interesting. We are in the Philadelphia suburbs, and I can attest that there are a lot of city people flowing out to the gun shops in the suburbs to buy guns and train on the indoor ranges. In particular, there are lots of black women standing in lines for hours to get into the buildings. We needed a few supplies and couldn't get into the building at the place we'd typically go. They closed the line a few hours before closing time for the store. We drove further out from the city to another shop and they confirmed what we saw of the demographics. We spent Father's Day at a Cabela's in the next county. The firearms section of the store looked like it had been visited by a swarm of locusts. Lots of empty space on the shelves and long lines for small arms advice and purchase. People are taking steps to secure their homes and families, and it's not just suburban people.

The mob connected areas of Philadelphia have not been bothered. We live near a suburban borough that is known for being mob 'protected' while the fellas run numbers out the back of the barber shop. Only two places bothered to board up and our local protests all remained peaceful. He is right that an armed society that is willing to defend itself is a more peaceful society.
