Quotas Can Help Fix the Glaring Whiteness of America’s C-Suites. They’ve helped women. Why not apply them to the boardrooms and middle management of the Fortune 500?

The whole idea of quotas is wildly racist. It is also how entities (businesses, countries, even whole societies) fail.

A quota says "We don't think this demographic group is capable of competing on their own merits. ie. the demographic group identified in the quota must me inferior to others. Tell me how that isn't racist. You can't.

Also, the moment we start bringing in people merely because they check a box, rather than they are the best we could find, then we start degrading our product/service. You want to fly to the ISS on a rocket designed by engineers with the "right" color of skin, the "right" gender, the "right" sexual orientation... Or do you want to strap yourself on a flying bomb designed by the most competent people that could be found - regardless of all that other category 3 BS? Exactly. You can feel-good yourself right into oblivion. Go ahead, dilute your capability - I'm sure there are competitors out there who are not.

I've been my company's "diversity officer" for our site for years. Other than answering a few emails I haven't done one single thing. I haven't forwarded one single email, scheduled any events, or lifted a finger to help or hurt anyone. Guess what - we have a diverse workforce. Not because we wanted to check a box, but because these are the best people we could find and sign on. No-one needed any help, we were glad to get every single person we've hired. And yes, there were people of every demographic we have said no-thanks to. Also people of every demographic we've tried to get but lost to other sites, other jobs. That's fair and open competition in action.

This makes sense, because the point of having a company in a capitalist system is to signal how virtuous you are, not to make money.

That's fundamental. See Adam Smith, The Wealth of Nations.

They need reminding that blacks make up only 14% of the population.

I recall an incident in Chicago (probably written up by the late great Mike Royko), involving a company in an Hispanic neighborhood in Chicago whose workforce was all or nearly all Hispanic. A black woman claimed that she had applied for a job and had not been hired. There was no evidence that she had in fact applied for a job but the company was ordered to pay her the wages that she would have earned from that date and to run ads in the paper advertising for employees. I’m sure it was a minimum-wage type place.

Right now in America, fighting even the insinuation of anti-black racism is more important than everything else in daily life. That is sick and demented.

Racist. That’s unconstitutional.

This is advocating for criminal racism against white people.

OK! How about quotas in the NFL and the NBA. How about quotas that mirror the population. That means 15% blacks and the rest whites. Forget about who can play the best. Just make it about quotas.

“How about quotas in the NFL and the NBA.”

They both discriminate wildly against little people, the disabled and the elderly.

I have found no data that show improvement for women not the ones hlped up.

As I said there are no such data one need prove data exist to invalidate my statement.

Corporations want to win. They want the right people at the helm, not eeo welfare cases.

If someone’s goal was/is to further lower peoples’ opinions and expectations of blacks, this would be (another) good ‘issue’ for them to get behind.

As I said there are no such data

You also said, "If women were to work as hard as men they would have representation. Period." Where's the data for your claim, as you insist must be provided for the contrary claim?

If I have to explain why a corporation would want anyone nale irvfemale to extend the bottom line then I am on the wrong board.

So I guess you are right: quotas good.

Well, they could get the worst golfers on the board to identify as FOCs, and let them play from the women’s tees...

Corporations don't want things - people do. And sometimes people want to be around other people like them more than they want to steadfastly pursue their employer's goals.

So I guess you are right: quotas good.

Please quote where I said quotas good.

What I said was: double standards on data support bad.

I was in commercial banking for 42 years. You couldn’t get me back in to it at gunpoint. You have my unalloyed sympathy.

I have known a few of them, back in the day. A high-pay BOD position is a 21st birthday present.

Yes, but that’s of course a completely different situation—major owners having a seat at the board.

Bravo.

Was self-employed for all of my working like after about age
20. I’m 77.

First, liquidate. You need a cash cushion and some time, which can still be purchased.

Lower your life style.

Find a location. It may not be ideal. It must lack attractions to the wackninnies. It must be affordable. You will need to spend to update and secure as much as possible. Security is not just arms. It is electric power, water and food. do not use internet searches for *best places*. They will be overrun and not just by like-minded people.

Once re-located, assess your new area and your skill sets. Where do you fit? What can you do? Your age, family situation and extent of competition will be part of this. At times, I have seen oversupply of wood workers and midwives and massage therapists. I personally believe in bartering with farmers if you are not already one.

Can you produce where you land and sell into the rest of the world? This can actually be advantageous, as it keeps your local profile low while building your local market.

Given our present world situation, how flexible can you become? Things will be in flux a long time.
