A New Mexico prosecutor on Wednesday dropped a shooting charge against a man suspected of shooting a protester in New Mexico, stressing the need for further investigation after “rumors on social media” emerged about the incident.
Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez dropped an initial aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge against Steven Baca, a 31-year-old former City Council candidate, after online images emerged showing the protester Scott Williams, 39, holding what is rumored to be a knife before he was allegedly shot by Baca, Reuters reported.
“There have been rumors on social media about what transpired in the final seconds before this and we are actively looking into those and whether or not this was justified,” Torrez told an online press briefing, according to the newswire. “The reason he is not facing that charge right now is because this investigation is not complete.”
During the protest, Williams was reportedly attempting to topple a statue of a Spanish conquistador.
Torrez said he had serious concerns an initial police investigation into the shooting did not identify who owned the multiple weapons – including knives – collected at the scene, nor interviews by key bystanders and police, according to Reuters.
The district attorney reportedly said he expected Baca to claim self defense in the case.
Torrez said his office put out a call for information regarding allegations that Williams was armed.
“Right now I have no evidence to suggest that he was in any way armed,” Torrez said, according to Reuters. “The fact that we haven’t charged it (shooting charge) today doesn’t mean it will not be charged.”

So there was knives collected at the scene, very interesting.

Yeah, but ‘mare’ timmy of Albuquerque has already found the shooter guilty so there is that................. Heard there is a bevy of other felony charges hanging on the shooter.
In my opinion, the charges were dropped because there is OVERWHELMING evidence it WAS self defense.
No way they’d let it go if for one minute they thought they could get a successful jury finding.

Odd way to describe someone bashing people with a skateboard.
I believe the shooting was justifiable self defense.
The item skateboard dude has in his left hand is glasses. No idea what he’s got up his sleeve in his right hand. It’s possible he sharpened the sole arm of his glasses to be a shiv, but it is definitely glasses.

This protestor obviously had not listened to his Supreme Leader Barrack Hussein Obama who waxed eloquently about bringing a ‘knife to a gun fight’.

I saw the video. Torrez was defending himself. There were two guys who had a hold of him and were beating him when someone was going to hit him with a skate board when Torrez pulled his hand gun and started shooting. The one “knocked” down looked like an antifa goon.
It may have been Williams, it is not clear.
When you are instituting a reign of political terror, you cannot charge your enforcers with crimes.
It defeats the purpose of the political terror.
Torrez is the prosecutor.
Steve Baca is the man who defended himself.
Yes, even the policeman who was undercover at the protest gave a statement that was 100% consistent with self defense. Not smart to prosecute when the police officer on the scene is going to be the star witness for the defense.

I saw the video. I am so terrible to smirk when the antiFa goon took a few bullets, was lying on the ground. Mess around with the bull and you just might get the horns.

Somewhere, sometime, someone decided that to respond to an assault with deadly force the assailant had to be “armed”. As in you shoot, assailant has to have a firearm.
“I feared for my life”. Well, he was only kicking you. Only threatened to kill you. Only broke your jaw. Only beat your head against the concrete. Only sucker punched you. Only grabbed your wife’s breast. Blah, blah, blah.
Whoever said “an armed society is a polite society” never lived in these times.
You don’t carry a weapon to keep from getting killed. You carry a weapon to prevent bodily harm and possibly getting killed. What? Woman shoots a serial rapist and she gets prosecuted because “well he raped a bunch of women but he never actually killed anyone” THink that examples extreme? Think again.
We’re heading to a place where unless you are shot first you cannot defend yourself.
