The Louisville Metro Police Department is in danger of losing 200 or more officers by the end of the summer, according to the leader of the union that represents them.
River City FOP President Ryan Nichols said LMPD is at risk of losing not only veteran officers but young ones, and that could gravely affect public safety and the future of the department.
"As much as I would like to say I would encourage all of our officers to stay here and that this is a great place to work, the fact is that's not true," Nichols said.
Nichols said reasons officers are looking to leave include lack of leadership, unfair benefits and feeling unappreciated.
"These are wonderful men and women of LMPD who are out here to protect and serve the community that they love and live in, and they're being villainized for it," Nichols said.
The FOP said LMPD currently has around 1,100 officers, which is already down about 150 officers.
"The continual loss of officers will cause us not to be able to provide the basic public safety services, even to the level we're providing now," Nichols said.
Nichols said that could lead to slower response times, increased violence and more unsolved crimes.
Community Activist Christopher 2X said while some people would feel the void of losing 200 officers, others may not.
"Those who are connected to the social justice causes and advocacies probably aren't going to miss 200 officers," he said. "Some are talking about defunding the police department."
2X said protesters and officers are calling for a solution that will not come until there is trust.
"It's a mess," he said. "I hope we can straighten it out, because we have to do our best to co-exist."
WDRB News received the following statement from Mayor Greg Fischer on Wednesday.
“Our officers have an unbelievably difficult job. I am incredibly appreciative for the job they do every day, but especially now, constantly working to keep everyone safe while protecting the First Amendment rights of protesters. They are working long hours, long days, sacrificing for the rest of our community, and for that I am grateful.”
Do I really need to comment on that?
When the west side of Louisville has their uptick in crime, they will be complaining that the city is neglecting them.
Louisville wants a leftist mayor like Fischer, they can have him. LMAO at the last paragraph, a statement by Fischer. It's a wonder lightning didn't strike him when he said that.

Kentucky is constitutional carry. But since it is heavily Democrat it is not likely the average liberal there will figure out that it is his only responsibility to protect himself.
A disproportionate amount of serious crime occurs on the west side. The area where the cop haters live, if you get my meaning.
But I’m not letting LMPD off the hook either. It has a poor record and a habit of doubling down on corruption and mistakes.
Amazing that Louisville has been Democrat for a very long time. Every democrat city is the same. Keep blacks in their place and tell them how the democrats help them more than anyone else.
Did you know Louisville still buses their black children rather than giving the kids local schools where the parents can participate? Or that the majority of blacks live in West Louisville rather than integrate them into the community? My guess is that busing is a sop to keep them in place. The number of private schools both secular and religious is huge.

I’m shocked that police haven’t walked away from their jobs in every urban area.
How about waking up one morning, going to do your job, and the next day being indicted for a murder that it was never in your mind to commit, even in your wildest dreams?
I am a bit concerned that all these cops resigning could be exploited to replace them with “politically pure” cops who would have no problem participating in purges of problematic persons.
This will take many months for the full effects to be seen as urban police apply for jobs where they are welcomed and appreciated.
More experienced police officers will also be applying for private security jobs—which of course will be in greater demand since the police will be seen as unreliable.
When not in lockdown, I drive to downtown Louisville to work every day and I carry in the car. I’ve never had to so much as think about using it. Those may have been the salad days.

Was in Louisville last Sept traversing the Urban Bourbon Trail...with the fairly recent resurgence of the downtown area related to the UBT, including distilleries, restaurants, etc., I can’t see the business association being a fan of what’s happening...
Most cities’ police forces are jobs programs for blacks and women already.

I don’t carry all the time because where I live just don’t feel the need. Although I know in theory I should. However when I go into Louisville I always carry and while it’s not comfortable during the summer now carrying whenever I ride my bike. I told my wife I’m not going to get a flat or something on the side of the road out here in the middle of nowhere which is where I ride most of the time, and have some yay-hoos in a car come by and take me out
Are you still working at home or are you back to going to Louisville daily? We still haven’t done that get together.
Lots of cars in Louisville with coexist bumper stickers. Be funny if it wasn’t so annoyingly stupid. The other thing I see driving around is the signs in yards that say just be kind. Cuz that’s going to make me be nice instead of being a jerk LOL
HA! I’m home until at least August. Saving 3 hours a day and a tank every two days. And when I get off work at 3 I’m ready to keep working on the property instead of getting home at 4:30 ready to crash. :)
I forgot all about getting together. We finished our nw 30x60 garage and I’ve been working solid getting it up and functional and using it.

My daughter’s gas usage is now so low that if she hasn’t gone to the store she has to take her car out and drive it to full running temperature to keep it up.
I alternate using each of our cars. As far as the Indian is concerned, it will never be in danger of sitting too long LOL. I’ve put 15k miles on it in the 16 months I’ve owned it. Getting hard to find a road in central KY I’ve missed.
