Hydroxychloroquine: US stockpile stuck with 63 million doses of the drug after FDA revokes drug distribution for Coronavirus
CNN via MSN ^ | 06/17/2020 | By Elizabeth Cohen and Wesley Bruer, CNN

The federal government is stuck with 63 million doses of hydroxychloroquine now that the US Food and Drug Administration has revoked permission for the drug to be distributed to treat coronavirus patients.

The government started stockpiling donated hydroxychloroquine in late March, after President Trump touted it as "very encouraging" and "very powerful" and a "game-changer."

But Monday, the FDA revoked its emergency use authorization to use the drug to treat Covid-19, saying there was "no reason to believe" the drug was effective against the virus, and that it increased the risk of side effects, including heart problems.

That leaves the Strategic National Stockpile with 63 million doses of hydroxychloroquine, plus another 2 million doses of chloroquine, a related drug donated by Bayer, according to Carol Danko, a spokesperson for the US Department of Health and Human Services.

Many public health experts point to all of this as an unfortunate chapter in the history of the pandemic thus far.

"Nationally, we put a great emphasis on one drug, hydroxychloroquine," said David Holtgrave, the dean of the School of Public Health at the University at Albany, who co-authored a study of the drug as a treatment for coronavirus. "I worry that history will judge this as having over-invested in one treatment pathway as opposed to looking more broadly at a larger number of treatment candidates."

Before the FDA revoked its authorization, the stockpile had already distributed 31 million doses. Novartis and Mylan donated doses of the drug to the stockpile.

"HHS is working with the companies that donated the product to determine the available options for the product that remains in the Strategic National Stockpile," Danko wrote in a statement to CNN.

At a Trump press conference, a HHS guy, wish I could remember his name, said the drug is legal and can be prescribed by a doctor for any reason.

Fake news.

NYT had the their own mocking article on the stockpile yesterday.

as for finding the truth about what really happened, don’t expect to find that in FakeNewsMSM (at east not easily).

however, here’s the video:

Tweet: Israel Anderson:
Good news about the removal of the emergency restrictions on Hydroxychloroquine.

The FDA revoked its emergency use only restriction. This means hydroxychloroquine can now be used for any purpose prescribed by a doctor, just like any approved drug. This is good news. HQC is a zinc ionophore. Taken early with zinc, it’s the most effective treatment for COVID19.

The Mainstream media just can’t make up their minds.

When the FDA did not revoke permission for Hydroxychloroquine distribution, they bitched and moaned that those who truly need it ( Lupus and Malaria and Rheumatoid Arthritis patients ) will not have enough supplies because what they needed will be allocated to Covid-19 patients ( and they would bring out a few such patients who express their concern and publish their panicky statements ).

Now, get a load of this -— we have an oversupply of this drug because of the FDA’s decision and lo and behold, these very same patients have suddenly disappeared from the news.

Lie! Fake!

That is NOT what Sec Azar said:

No lie CNN won’t push. Their advertisers LOVE CNN’s proven ability to manipulate and sell!

there’s a big market for the *donated* HQC in the stockpile.

even this piece claims it’s a partial victory for the Democrats! what an unbelievable position for a news report!

16 Jun: The Weather Channel: COVID-19: US FDA Withdraws Emergency Use of Hydroxychloroquine, Chloroquine in Hospitals
by IANS
The United States is partially stopping the use of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ)...
But Health Secretary Alex Azar clarified that the FDA ruling was limited to hospital use with “the most extreme cases” and the medicines have not been completely banned and doctors can continue to prescribe them. “We continue to study in out-patient settings, as well as preventive. That data is not yet in,” he added.

When Trump was asked about the FDA decision by reporters at the White House, he deferred to Azar, who said: “If a doctor wishes to prescribe it, working with a patient, they may prescribe it for any purpose that they wish to do so.
“They may be used in hospitals, they may be used in outpatient, they may be used at home, all subject to a doctor’s prescription.”...

The above tweet does not tell us anything about what HHS Secretary said about hydroxychloroquine. It just said he was pressed.... so? What exactly did he say after that? The Tweet never informs us.

Why the heck is weather.com reporting this? What about the other news sources? Don’t we have any other source for this other than the Weather channel?

16 Jun: Livemint: Press Trust of India: Doctors can still prescribe HCQ to patients, says US health Secretary
Doctors can still prescribe anti-malarial drug hydroxychloroquine to patients, US Health Secretary Alex Azar said, hours after the FDA withdrew the emergency use authorisation of chloroquine and HCQ in the treatment of COVID 19 patients...

“At this point, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and chloroquine are just like any other approved drug in the United States. They may be used in hospital, they may be used in out-patient, they may be used at home, all subject to a doctor’s prescription,” Azar said.
“In fact, the FDA’s removal of the Emergency Use Authorization takes away what had been a significant misunderstanding by many that had made people think that somehow it could only be used in a hospital setting, and we’ve tried to make that clear throughout,” he said in response to a question.

During a White House media appearance with President Donald Trump, Azar asserted that HCQ was approved in the United States.
“If a doctor wishes to prescribe it, working with a patient, they may prescribe it for any purpose that they wish to do so. And, this (FDA’s decision) actually removes a potential barrier to them,” the health secretary said...

Azar described the media interpretation of FDA’s letter as INACCURATE.
“With the FDA finding that they don’t see enough data to support hospital-based use, for those who are the most extreme cases of patients who have been hospitalised, they took that restriction off. They took the Emergency Use Authorization off,” he said.
Azar asserted that FDA said its data in the hospital setting was not supportive. “We continue to study in out-patient settings, as well as preventative. That data is not yet in,” he added.
