I’d say you have a good handle on things. Do you think recent events have disturbed some Democrats enough to turn away from the Democrat party?

It seems to me that normal and good and decent people are seeing the Democrats true, ugly colors and they don’t like what they’re seeing. Or is the hate for Trump enough to keep them in line?

Like everyone else in America, my personal contacts have shrunk and become parochial over the past decades. I can only go by what I can find in the few, mostly conservative, websites/news sites that still allow comments. So, anything I think is FWIW.

I read of people who have left/#WalkedAway specifically because they can no longer stomach the lying hypocrisy and the shattering of our society. My sense is these are people in their 40s and older.

The hate for Trump is inculcated,IMO. It isn’t organic/authentic. I have supported Trump since he declared and agreed with him since before that. Personally, I find him a tedious speaker, most of the time. His persona can be grating. But, I have no doubt of his sincerity and I admire his actions, tactics and the way he has led while under siege. I would never change my vote and by the same token, I fear most D voters are similarly able to excuse the personal attributes of their chosen officials as long as they believe those officials have honest intentions toward the country and the citizens.

THAT is what I think must be giving D voters pause. If your children and siblings and friends are under pressure and in physical fear, if your livelihood is balanced on the whim of some wackscold, if your home could be targeted or even incidentally destroyed because of ideologues who seem less and less trustworthy and authentic, how could you continue to give allegiance to them and their ever-shifting pronouncements and demands?

The real answer is IDK.

We all have a sense that this is so, that they are withdrawing. I watch interviews with college-age people and I see true weakness and the shifting gaze when they denounce individual violent actions, but voice support for the underlying ideology. I’m pretty sure they have realized that even vocal support will not protect them. We all see the proggies attack their own. I know from my own experience, even 20-30 years ago, that it takes one envious or deranged person to incite a group against a chosen goat and how that makes you insecure, then wary, then isolate, then angry enough to break ties of a lifetime.

But my personal experiences now are more impersonal. I do see the committed change agents, now elders themselves, pop up in organizations with which I still have vague and distant connections, to rally the flagging troops and that gives me hope. If they had committed cadres, they could just mouth vague *way to go* type comments. Instead, they post screeds to group email lists. Not the actions of winners.

I’m hoping for some incident that is so truly beyond the pale that even the most brainwashed D voter at the very least sits the election out at all levels. If our side can then get even another 1%-2% of those, we win.

For now.
