Second class citizens, you say! The nerve of some people.
Technically, the South wasn’t allowed to have slaves, either. So why didn’t they build their damn railroads despite not being “allowed” to?
The steel mills were in the North and did not ship rails to the South for railroads.
Why didn’t the South build their own steel mills?
Great Bray!
They did not have the money or population to build steel mills. Where are the steel mills now?
Good point.
Your link does not go to this essay.
Because the South had access to cheap labor (slaves) so they had no reason to import machinery... factories for rails, or innovations in general.
The presence of cheap labor STOPS innovation.
Slaves or illegals - their presence destroys ‘cause in the short run cheap labor’s profitable - in the long run it leaves regions crippled and backwards.
Good counter-point. Ball’s back in your court, bray.
You still do not have the labor force and capital you need to build heavy manufacturing factories. The South was an agrarian economy which does not require the large populations a factory based economy does or the capital you had in NY, Phili, Boston and DC.
Slaves were used to clear land and plant fields not run factories. You had 20 million in the north and around 9 million in the South.
True, but when the war ended the south stated industrializing. Machines can pick cotton cheaper than free workers... but not cheaper than slaves. Industrialization’s an economic choice - what’s the cheapest and best way to achieve the result..
There were grape picking machines in Australia long before they came to the United States — because illegals from Mexico were cheaper in the US at picking grapes than machines.
Glad to see you healthy and in fighting condition.
Ditto that for me bud.
Great job as usual.
Without lying, brainwashing, vote buying and treachery at every level when electioneering time arrives there would be no democrat party.
They are in the midst of doing what they do best:
SELF DESTRUCTING.
We should let them continue their future.
Have a great thread tomorrow as I finally get to go fishing!!
My father’s family picked cotton during the depression when he was 10 yrs old. The cotton gin and tractor eliminated millions of workers.
Thanks WN, very unpopular subject.
You earned it.
LOL!I’ll post a fish pic!Have a great thread!
