A .22 rifle is a great place to start. Don't underestimate it. Every large land animal on earth has been killed with a .22, including elephants.
Probably more people killed with a .22 than with a .30-30.
You can get a good .22 for a couple of hundred dollars.

I have seen the Mossberg 702 or the Rossi RS22 (mostly the same rifle) going for less than $100 on sale. They generally work well. Occasionally a clinker that needs a burr removed.

True enough— get enough 22 rounds into certain target areas (like, the head) and you have a dead perp/enemy/criminal.
To be blunt, up close and personal with a reduced powder 22 round to the head (doesn’t exit but rattles around) is the choice of...clandestine experts. But a 1/4 mile away Creedmoor is darned good as well.
