I don’t know why we keep trying to re-invent the stupid voting machines.
In Virginia, we have paper ballots, you mark them, then you feed them into the machine, it tells you they were read, and you are done. The only thing I dislike is that our current machines don’t have a way to put on screen what you voted for — I’d love to see confirmation that it read my ballot correctly.
But this gives us a paper trail (the ballots are collected in the machine), and an electronic reporting, and you don’t have the problem of an electronic touchscreen selecting the wrong candidate when you touch it.
Same in Florida. No matter what the machines actually register the paper ballots are there. I think the paper ballots are what should be counted and the machines used as confirmation in the event of cheating accusations or recounts.

Same thing in our (Howard)Maryland county. Its simple and easy to validate/audit/recount.
