The "folks" running NASCAR should just go bankrupt.. and maybe go choke while they're going bankrupt.

Oh I agree, but when the corporations who sponsor and broadcast your activity threaten to cut cash flow, it does get your attention.

Who ever runs that organization doesn’t realize how much money that sport generates and the ripple effect it has.

And that’s the end of NASCAR.

People who would actually fly the flags will probably stay away. And some people who don’t fly the flag but don’t like being told they are racist will probably stay away.
We don’t actually know how many are in these categories.
But attendance at NASCAR events is down anyway, mostly (I think) due to generational changes.
The real question is how many young people want to watch evil gasoline-guzzling cars go round and round and round.

I myself have never been interested in NASCAR, but my understanding of their history makes me think they are absolutely nuts for trying to pull a “woke” stunt like this. So far as I know, their only fan base is predominantly Southern men.

This was not Richard Petty’s edict.
They were probably afraid of racially based fights breaking out. Plenty of people drink too much and get rowdy at sporting events regardless.
