This is actually a good idea but not for the reasons they are supporting it. In general, having police stationed on campus was not really a good idea in the first place.

Many schools now have ‘resource officers’—the one I sub at recently acquired one. Urban schools to actually try and control crimes committed by students; more rural to provide defense from outside intruders.

This creates a bit of a problem. It turns out that ‘minority’ students (black & hispanic) are disciplined at a higher rate than white or Asian students. This cannot be because they cause more trouble, the only possible explanation is racism.

Adding to the problem is that some parents have discovered that if their child can be diagnosed with a handicap, such as a behavior disorder, they can collect Social Security money every month. An added bonus is that the child is subject to less discipline at school.

As chaos descends upon the school, parents who can, pull their kids out, increasing the percentage of kids who are basically out of control. The schools become increasingly minority, far out of proportion to the minority population of the city or town they’re in. St Louis is about 50% black, but the schools are 85% black.

Parents who send their kids to private/parochial schools don’t tend to vote for school taxes, so the schools end up have to deal with more problems with less money.

I don’t see how it gets better. Politically and now legally you can’t kick the kids out who cause the problem. A teacher who is attacked by a student will be punished if she tries to defend herself. The attacking student, especially if he or she has an IEP will not.
