I’m reminded of an Olympic ceremony from the past. Opening ceremony, all nations dipped their flags to the Olympic something-or-other. A brave American refused, saying, “This flag dips for NO earthly potentate...”

The practice of kneeling in western european culture came about because Romans were short. Most of the barbarians in northern europe were six footers so when they addressed the short Roman conquerors they were required to take a knee so as not to look down on their betters. This subsequently led to religious and state occassions.
