I can’t speak for a lot of other states but Florida LEO’s are very much like you described.
We throw them out in front of us and don’t bother to back them up. They are shot, stabbed, spit upon every day. The least we can do is provide them with a spiffy uniform.

They once were “peace officers” but now are “law enforcement.” Of course they need to dress the part, kitting themselves out like ninja turtles. Recently I saw an interesting little lineup showing how Lego’s little police figurines have changed over the years. The early models were little men with a hat and a badge and maybe a Sam Browne-style cross-strap. Nowadays, they sport elaborate helmets, armor, and sci-fi weapons. And they’re fully diverse too — men and women sporting turbans, facial hair, ponytails, exotic skintones, etc.
