I guess Lincoln united us, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives and a devastation that we’re still recovering from, a century and a half later. Maybe Mattis is looking for something like that?
Or maybe he’s looking for Obama’s style of uniting us, where over half the country is told to be perpetually ashamed of itself, and all of us are supposed to be ashamed of our history, heritage and principles.
