It is too late once they have taken it away. Once we mentally realize that our retirement plans, houses, way of life are gone, we will go to battle , not before. As long as we think they will let us keep things, we will be subservient.

Your last paragraph is correct. Both sentences. They were virtuous. They did not want war with England. They did not want to part with England. They attempted to work out their differences time after time to no avail. Failing that, they did as honorable men throughout the ages before them had done.
