The family of George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who died shortly after he was arrested by police officers on suspicion of passing a counterfeit $20 bill, has retained prominent forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden to perform an independent autopsy.
Baden, a former New York City chief medical examiner, confirmed to Fox News Friday that the Floyd family had asked him to perform the autopsy and said he would travel to Minneapolis Saturday. Baden added that he would discuss his findings early next week.
Earlier Friday, former police officer Derek Chauvin, 44, was was charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter in the case, which sparked protests across the United States and riots in Minneapolis. A criminal complaint against Chauvin states that he kept his knee on Floyds neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds, including nearly three minutes after Floyd stopped moving and talking.
Police had arrested Floyd and were trying to put him in a squad car when he stiffened up and fell to the ground, saying he was claustrophobic, according to the complaint.
An official autopsy revealed nothing to support strangulation as the cause of death, concluding that the combined effects of being restrained, potential intoxicants in Floyds system and his underlying health issues, including heart disease, likely contributed to his death.

Dr. Michael Baden will be 86 in July.
He agreed to perform the autopsy after George Floyd’s family offered him a suitcase full of $20 bills.
Re: “cutting off the blood flow to the carotid artery will cause brain hypoxia and death.”
The criminal complaint also said - “no findings support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia” - which includes heart failure and the disruption of blood flow from a major artery or vein anywhere in the body.
some dramatic medical emergency happened and it happened in an instant....the guy was talking up a storm and then suddenly just died....
the cops are idiots and they get away with this crap way too many times, but I suspect the the victim died of a drug OD....I suppose if the vic or his friends told the police that the vic just took a huge amount of drugs perhaps the cops decided to get an ambulance to transport and perhaps having the victim lie prone prevented aspiration....
just grabbing at straws here I know...
So - did they check his brain for Oxygen deprivation?
TOX REPORT NOT IN
“However, cutting off the blood flow to the carotid artery will cause brain hypoxia and death.”
No indication this happened. If the kneeling had cut off the carotid artery, he would have fainted in about 10 seconds. Besides, the carotid arteries are not on the back of the neck.
exactly- unfortunately people will still refuse to accept it- they saw a ‘knee on a neck’ and have concluded he suffocated- and nothing will change their mind
Floyd had to know that he had two serious heart conditions, and blocked arteries- yet he still chose to risk his own life by taking drugs (possibly, it hasn’t been determined yet) and by engaging the police in a struggle for 10 minutes- The police can’t know that his heart was bad- all they know is that they have a powerful large man resisting them, refusing to get into the car- and who has to be subdued and held down until the ambulance gets there- The police even told a bystander that that is what they had to do because floyd refused to get in the car-
Heart attacks can cause one to pass out, and feel like they are ‘losing their breath’, but again- almost every perp taken down lies about ‘not being able to breath’ and about ‘police brutality’- and floyd had thrown himself to the ground in a fit claiming that he had’ claustrophobia’ and claiming he ‘couldn’t breath’ which is a common tactic of perps to try to prevent themselves being arrested and put in back of car-
Sadly many folks are claiming this cop was a white racist who gleefully murdered a black man-
In 2002, when discussing the Danielle van Dam case on Larry King Live, Dr Michael Baden stated that, When the passions of the community and the district attorney and the prosecutor are so raised in a case, one can get a false verdict. He quoted the case of Jeanine Nicarico, who was abducted, raped and murdered. Police, prosecutors and forensic scientists got so caught up in those passions that they gave false results, and as a consequence, two men were wrongly convicted and spent years in jail. Baden added that, I think that there is a real danger in these most heinous of cases for mistakes to be made. And we have to calm our passions, as horrible as this crime is. (Referring to the crimes against Danielle.)
Ironically, just a month later, there was a repeat, when David Westerfield was wrongly convicted of kidnapping and murdering Danielle. And Baden was himself guilty of what he had warned against, when he dismissed the science of forensic entomology, which was the strongest evidence of Westerfields innocence.
I fear that there may be another repeat in the George Floyd case. Lets get all the facts and then calmly consider them before condemning anyone.
I agree with your assessments.
I believe he intends to be well-meaning, but he also strikes me as one that is willing to shape to the data.
