A passionate gathering to protest anti-black and anti-Indigenous racism, dubbed Justice for Regis, made its way through downtown Toronto on Saturday afternoon.
Thousands of people, some carrying signs that read, “Stop killing us,” and, “Black Lives Matter,” while chanting, “Shame, shame,” and, “Say her name,” gathered after high-profile police-involved deaths of black people in both Canada and the U.S. — the latter prompting several days and nights of protests in American cities.
In Toronto, the Justice for Regis protest was organized by a group called Not Another Black Life after Regis Korchinski-Paquet, 29, fell from the balcony of a 24th-floor Toronto apartment while police were in attendance on Wednesday night.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is looking into the death.
The protest route was initially thought to be Christie Pits to Queen’s Park but barricades were set up outside Toronto Police Headquarters at Bay and College Sts., along with extra officers, as it became clear the demonstration was headed that way instead.
A small group of protesters angrily shouted at the police but the family of Korchinski-Paquet, who apparently rode in a truck during the march, asked for the crowd to dissipate once the event had ended.
Early in the protest, it got tense briefly between some of the marchers — most of whom wore face masks — and CP24 TV reporter Shanelle Kaul and her crew while she was reporting on live TV, a scene she later described “as quite chaotic.”
“People began getting a little bit aggressive,” Kaul said on CP24 afterwards, explaining the crew just got caught up in the crowd and couldn’t find a way out.

The deceased had mental health issues.
The police responded to a complaint of a disturbance at her apartment.
While the police were in the apartment, she fell off her balcony and fell 24 floors to the ground
Family claims she was such a good girl, who would never kill herself.
Therefore, the police pushed her off the balcony.
Grief driven logic
And the financial backers of BLM call them and say “riot”...
